End of the Semester Reflection

Honestly, college was so different than how I expected. I have surprised myself with how well I have been doing in my classes, and I have studied this year so much more than I studied my entire high school career. It has been a nice change to see all my hard work pay off in the form of grades. I expected this year to make lots of friends and do well in my courses, and exercise frequently. Although I haven’t made that many friends, I am content with the ones I have made. I also have been utilizing the Student Recreation Center at least 5 times a week. Like I had stated before, I have been doing very well in my courses, so I am content in that regard as well! If I could go back in time, I wish I knew that my courses would be doable, and I wouldn’t be as easily overwhelmed as I thought I would be. I would tell myself I am smarter than I thought! I really only study for my music culture class, my chemistry course, and logic and philosophy. These are the only classes with exams and require heavy memorization. My professor for World Literature has yet to give us an assignment. Chemistry also requires a broad understanding for lots of topics. I would say that I study chemistry for at least an hour and a half a week, and music culture probably half an hour each week. Logic is a bit different. If I am confused, I take the needed time to study my notes, but other than that, I do not really look over them after the class period has ended. I have learned that saying things out loud multiple times helps me remember them better. Office hours has been a savior for me this semester as well. It is so helpful to have one on one time with a professor to really grasp all the needed content. I will be sure to continue taking advantage of that next semester. Next semester, I will continue writing my notes before class, and coming to any study sessions available. I think that next semester, I will use different colored pens to label my sections of notes to avoid any confusion, and to help me find information faster. While I was only enrolled in Health professions and Chemistry, I found that they were both very connected in the way that they discussed injustices occasionally in the health field, such as the Flint Water Crisis. We learned about environmental injustices, and economic injustices as well when it came to healthcare and diet. While chemistry was more science based and health professions was more real world oriented, I was able to learn both about the injustice of the Flint Water Crisis, and about the science behind it that caused it to be so detrimental. The most beneficial event for me by far was the Therapeutic Recreation event. I decided to even switch my minor to Rec Therapy after watching how hands on and fun this environment seemed. I love the hands on aspect of it, and I feel that it would give me lots of experience for a career in the health field.
