CYSE 201S Article Review #2

Preventing Cybercrimes and Cybersecurity Risks

Claire Seunguen Lee shows the importance of mitigating, minimizing and preventing cybercrimes and cybersecurity risks. With the world increasing its technology within the cybersecurity field there has also been the arrival of more cybercrimes. Cybercriminals use many tactics to steal information that is passed throughout society. Within this article Claire Seunguen Lee explains how the use of global and student samples help better the understanding of how cybersecurity can be managed.

In the first section of this article Claire Seunguen Lee expresses the importance of how cybercrime and cybersecurity have become very extensive and emerging fields. Claire shows how this article relates to the topic of social sciences through criminology. Criminology is the study of crime, the criminals that commit the crimes, and how the world and society react to these crimes. Since criminology is being used to study these cybercrimes and cybercriminals this allows for the understanding of the correlation between them. Since the question being asked is how to mitigate and prevent these cybercrimes from happening, Claire explains this through three different things. First is understanding the effects of self-control and its correlation to cybercrimes. Next is the ability to identify, process, and comprehend these cybercrimes while being able to prevent them from happening. Lastly, is assessing of the technological globalization of the public health domain.

Furthermore, Claire discusses different types of experiments and studies to help gain a better understanding of what influences a cybercriminal. The first study done was survey with American college students, and it measured the self-control of each participant. The results showed that students with low self-control were more associated with things like cyber offending and cyber-victim offending. This survey allows researchers to study one’s behavior, plus it allows researchers to apply theories to the new cybercrime world. The next experiment was done with the theory of situational crime prevention. This theory allows for the examination of common cybersecurity measures, crime prevention activities, and especially cybercrimes. The results of this experiment showed that the best ways to prevent these cybercrimes from starting at the beginning with things like target hardening, entry/exit screening, and mitigating the temptation. The study done amongst the global health realm is shown through a framework and how this framework is used to prevent cybersecurity risks for healthcare organizations. While this framework allowed for ways to help prevent the risks of cyber threats it suggested that the public health realm is a field that harbors cybersecurity risks.

Since Claire describes the importance of mitigating and preventing these risks amongst the school and health systems it shed light on the people affected by these cybersecurity risks. The school and health systems hold sensitive data about people’s personal information which creates concerns and challenges. While these systems are used worldwide people’s personal information could be stolen, sold, or both which could lead to problems down the road.

This article sheds light on how important it is to mitigate and prevent cybercriminals from committing cybercrimes. With the world rapidly advancing its technologies within the school and health systems, people’s personal information is at risk. But with a proper understanding of the mitigation and prevention tools places like schools, universities, and health care systems can protect a society’s personal information.
