Leaders Program Reflection

Realize deeply that the present moment is all you’ll ever have.

My Reflection

The LeADERS program is a stimulating experience that allows students to gain further expertise in distinctive focal areas that will further develop qualities unique to the essence of a remarkable leader. Hence the acronym, leadership, academic internship experience, diversity, entrepreneurship, research, and service-learning make up the key factors of a leader at ODU. I took part in this program to not only expand upon my knowledge but to really challenge myself to commence new experiences and learning opportunities.

Although like many others, due to the pandemic, a few challenges arose in trying to complete some parts of the program such as an internship and a service learning project, I was able to use my undergraduate research experience along with my Wellness Programming course as alternatives to showcase my capabilities in different ways. Personally, this experience has allowed me to build confidence in myself and my abilities, and acquire feasible skills to be successful in my career field. My overall perspective of the program has been immeasurably priceless. Through my LeADERS experience, I’ve been able to connect with others who may have been on completely different paths in their respective lives but have shared a mutual initiative to grow as students and most importantly individuals.

I am impressed with myself for not just taking on the challenge of pursuing the honor of being an ODU LeADER graduate but most especially for believing in myself and the seemingly ceaseless work that I have completed in such a short time. One thing that I learned from other leaders is to always persevere, especially when it’s hard. I hope that through my perseverance I can be in a position to influence others to take on challenges and unlock the potential leader in themselves.

Looking Forward

Moving forward in my life, my next goals are to complete my Master’s degree in kinesiology from George Mason University. I would like to keep continuing my education to become a cardiac rehab specialist for pediatrics or geriatrics whilst doing research on the effect of incorporating mindfulness practices for rehabilitation purposes. I would also like to contribute to research into the effects of veganism on athletes. After my Master’s program, I would like to go back to school again and obtain my Doctorate in Psychology.

The LeADERS program has helped me grow my passion as a student and taught me skills that are transferrable to my future career. I’ve advanced my computer literacy, public speaking, and descriptive writing, and enhanced my already diverse views and aptitude for gaining knowledge. This program has helped boost my prospects as a graduate student and continuously inspires me to dream big and always put my best efforts forward.
