“Addressing the lack of Technological advances within Underprivileged Communities.”

A problem I feel that needs to be addressed is the lack of access to technology, viable computer training, lack of focus on computer training and lack of effective Life Skills training available to schools and individuals that live in underprivileged communities. Many of these communities have fewer privileges and less opportunities afforded to them nor are the opportunities to experience technology available to them as it is within privileged communities. Resources are more readily available within homes, schools, libraries and community centers. The locations and resources are often newer and better maintained. Many of these facilities will also offer programs for assistance in areas that are proven to be a problem or that over time have been known to be deficient in some way or another. On the flip side, underprivileged communities do not often get the needed attention to keep people up to standards when compared to privileged communities. Facilities, equipment and personnel seem to be more problematic than in underprivileged communities. Much more time and attention are given to better communities. Everything from the people, time and attention are different. The technology that is available, is often outdated so much to a point that the usefulness of it is greatly diminished. With less and/or limited access to computers and technological advancements, it makes keeping up and remaining competitive even harder, adding to an already difficult situation. All these shortfalls can create barriers in reaching for a better life and often will lead to feelings of discouragement which too can lead to feelings of inadequacy. Having access to technology can also give encouragement by way of providing the ability to find and apply for jobs or finding programs available to assist you in. Along with barriers in causing feelings of a lack of self-worth from seeing things advancing around you but you not having the means or abilities to catch up. Sometimes even causing a feeling of low self-esteem. With a lack of knowledge on how to overcome these inadequacies or even the knowledge of how to address these issues it can quickly create a decline in motivation. With all the technological advancements available today, a person can quickly become discouraged if they do not have the means to change their situations or access to available resources. A new study for researchers at Iowa University Bloomington has proven that even in college there is a digital divide between affluent and poor students. Students from low-income families and students of color are more likely to have access to the reliable technology that is essentially a requirement in college today. (Treacy, 2018) Technology and access to technology can really make a difference in the level of success achieved by an individual. Much of the way we live today is influenced by technology. We can use technology to do everything from producing goods and services, conduct scientific investigations, research cures for disease, taking online classes, attend church service, order food, go shopping, and even workout. Technology can impact how we live, learn, communicate and even add influence on our thought process. Much of what we see and learn today is found through some form of technology. At least with an adequate level of knowledge for information technology and what is available can provide you with the means to find resources that can help make life changing situations. In today’s culture we use technology for so many different things in our lives. Just doing a quick walk around my home, I see how much technology plays an integral part of my daily life. Everything from my vehicles, alarm, washer and dryer all the way to my heating and cooling system can be controlled through advancements in technology. I am able to control everything through my cell phone. I can set my alarm and start a load of clothes, even monitor and adjust the temperature within my home to have the temperature set to what I would like for it to be before I get home.

Technology is defined as the application of scientific knowledge to the practical aims of human life or, as it is sometimes phrased, to the change and manipulation of the human environment. (Britannica, 2015) When we apply science to anything, it involves research. Research is conducted to find a new or often better way of doing things. Sometimes the old way is just not effective anymore, or there is a need to do things differently or better. There are many different areas of technology. The results of this research and change is to work and find a different or new more effective way to do things. This is how we develop new technology or technological advances. This is all part of the way we grow in life. It is no different when we apply technology to life, and it often results in change. As we grow and develop, we must find newer better ways of doing things. Growth is expected and should incorporate newer better ways of doing things. It should make life easier, so this requires time and efforts to make effective. When we look at how people grow, it is through technology and research. Technology affords us with the tools to grow. Research are the steps used to find new ways of doing things. Whatever the topics, it takes time to collect data, compare the data then analyze to determine the results. In addition to determining if the desired results can and will be achieved. For this instance, we can use technology to achieve our desired results of reaching people in order to expose them to life skills training. How to be better, do better and obtain the necessary skills in order to maintain a healthy way of life. Technology will offer many ways to offer life skills training outside of the normal face to face training that we are used to. Using technology, it will offer so many more options to people and eliminate many of the barriers caused by lack of transportation, lack of knowledge or just a lack of wanting to open up to learn and/or accept things. Much of what we achieve is based on what we are exposed to. If not exposed to the proper life skills, then we have no way of knowing how to apply the correct life skills. In part, this is because of a lack of access to the things that help us out in life. Technology can be a platform to elevate us to where we need to go or get us where we want to be. Access to technology can also increase critical thinking and research skills. All of which are necessary to learn and apply the skills that are needed for success. With technology, we have an opportunity to make learning more directly relevant by aligning both content and learning approaches with the immediate and long-term needs and interests of learner, and the situations in which they will need to use what they have learned. For example, technology allows learners and instructors to tap resources and expertise anywhere in the world, starting with their own communities. This ability can be particularly helpful in expanding opportunities for historically disadvantaged students by providing equity of access to high-quality learning materials, expertise, personalized learning experiences, and tools for planning future education or career pathways. (King, South, 2017) Throughout history it has shown that resources are limited within underprivileged communities. In keeping up with the changes withing society and staying abreast of these changes is not offered within underprivileged communities. Much of what is needed for success is scarce. Not only does this hinder growth it can lead to larger issues withing the communities; many of which lead to poverty.

Poverty is the state of one who lacks a usual or socially acceptable amount of money or material possessions. Poverty is said to exist when people lack the means to satisfy their basic needs. (poverty, n.d.) Poverty is a global endemic, caused by a variety of factors that interact with one another. There are three types of poverty: extreme, moderate and relative. Extreme poverty entails lack of basic resources for survival including food, water, shelter and sanitation. Persons of moderate poverty have access to the basic means of survival, but just barely. Relative poverty entails low income compared to the national average income and is highly prevalent in more developed territories. While poverty is experienced differently across time, space and culture, there are several causes that often overlap and create dire consequences. (Gupta, 2015) The commonality amongst all levels of poverty is the lack of resources. Basic items of necessity are often lacking so anything above and beyond this is almost impossible to obtain. Many of these things that are lacking are the same things that can put us in a place to be successful. Some of what we take for granted as so simple and easy to obtain are often overlooked as minutiae to those that have no problems with getting them. To someone impoverished it can seem as if impossible. Much of this what we look at in this way can be resources or assets to help underprivileged obtain a better life. We take the small things like having a cell phone, tablet, computer, internet or just access to these things almost as a part of our daily lives. But for someone that does not even have the means to or abilities to obtain the necessities for survival, these things can seem impossible to get. Much less to focus on life skills often does not make the list of priorities. Adults in these situations do not have the time or energy to focus on teaching basic life skills. If you have the choice to teach a child or to learn life skills or focus on basic survival; which would you choose? The average person has a hard enough time in teaching and learning basic life skills at an early age; to add to the equation, having to focus on teaching life skills just makes life and living that much harder. This endemic is so much larger. Without the ability to change your life it is almost impossible to be successful. If the resources are not in place for you to succeed or even access the resourced required to be better, then you are running up a steep hill. It is important that we began to look at ways to increase availability of resources within underprivileged communities. Without help it is impossible to change your situation, not matter who you are or what your situations is. Resources are the key to change and to be successful. Another thing that will need to be addressed are inadequate resources. Sometimes resources that are allocated are not substantial enough for their intended use. Providing sub standard resources is just as bad as no resources. The purpose of providing usable resources goes along with the required training to use the resources. If we offer training on things that can only be used at specific times and locations, what is the real value of the training provided. If we can provide training and resources up to a standard, then it can actually be taken and applied wherever needed; without having to worry about having adequate training to be relevant. Poverty creates a feeling of inferiority or insufficiency. The larger effects of which are harmful to both individuals and society. Poverty has gone on for many years. How do we address the issue and work toward change? At least by making resources available to everyone we can set a foundation of opportunity to try and change the current state of poverty. With adequate resources for all, access to technology will increase, therefore increasing opportunities for those in underprivileged communities.

Underprivileged is lacking the standard of living and opportunities enjoyed by most people in a society. (Underprivileged, 2011) When we lack a certain standard of living it is difficult to achieve growth in our lives nor do we have the resources to change our circumstances. Opportunity is defined as a favorable juncture of circumstances, a good chance for advancement or progress. Without these opportunities the possibility for growth is not there. In order to grow and make changes one must be afforded the chance to grow and be provided with the proper resources to make this growth a reality. Resources are the key to making change a reality. Many underprivileged communities want change to create better opportunities for themselves and their communities. Many just would like to know what it feels like to have the privilege to be able to access resources. When you have not been exposed to privilege, you really don’t know what it feels like or even what it entails. All you can see is that always there. Often time there is also a stigma attached to being underprivileged. Not always is it conscious. As humans we often pass judgement on people based on what we see. It is not often nor are there many of us that don’t pass judgement whether we mean to or not. If you see someone that does not look like you do, dress like you do, talk like you do or even present themselves in a way that you agree with; anything outside of accepting them is passing judgement on them. Unfortunately, we are all human and many of us do it. Somehow, we have to get past the pre-judgement and understand that everyone deserves a chance no matter where they are in life. When given the same opportunities and the same resources, we all have the potential to be successful. Many would just like to be able to have access to the basics that would allow the opportunity to focus on day-to-day things that would allow them to be productive and not have to focus efforts on how to get the basic necessities of life. Many people in underprivileged communities do not know what it’s like to be given the opportunity to focus on things that are required at that stage of your life. Often, they are forced to grow faster and take on challenges that exceed their peer groups. Because of this it is the many life skills are often lost. Privilege vs. underprivileged; privilege is based on the possession of or access to a resource; physical, social or psychological. Those who possess the resource obtain a power or advantage from it which expresses as a benefit or privilege to that community. Those who do not possess or have access to the resource or are unable to utilize it lack the power and the privilege. The causes of being under privileged vary greatly.

Technology offers better access to resources. With an internet connection, we have access to information at your fingertips 24 hours a day. We can find almost anything online, in its most up-to-date version. This means access to everything from research materials and educational apps to interactive, edutainment and open resources from prestigious universities around the world. (Himmelsbach, 2021) The goal is to use technology to offer life skills training in order to reach underprivileged communities. The first step is to identify what technological advances can be used to offer life skills to help people and communities grow. Part of the vision is to offer a safe community where usable technology is available for them to use in order to grow and use for their betterment. Finding a location that is not impacted by a lack of access to receiving quality signals because reception will be important wi-fi and internet. Learning how technological advancements and adequate life skills training can go hand in hand to aide you in finding answers on what is the next step, how to get there and how to cope with the issues that life may present to you. These reassess you in knowing how to progress towards a better future and life. Life skills are important in what they provide. Technology is also important as it can help you find the solution to the issues or events that are taking place in your life. When you feel like there is nowhere to go or there is uncertainty, technology can be a resource to show you how to, and even provide you with the means to find solutions to close the gaps, therefore using technology to leverage resources and find assets that are available. Technology affects the way individuals communicate, learn, and think. It helps society and determines how people interact with each other daily basis. It has positive and negative effects on the world, and its impacts on daily lives. We are living in an era where technological advances are common. One aspect of technology that has had a great impact on society is how it affects learning. (Allen, 2019) Learning is the most important factor of all of this. The learning process has become so expansive because of technology and what it has made available to us. The advances provide us with the abilities to create new learning opportunities aside from the old classroom setting with books and papers to grade. It has made available more collaborative, hands on styles of learning techniques. Problems often exist in how teachers communicate with students. Many times, there is a gap in communications. Whether it be because of age difference, socio economic status or just as simple as not seeing eye to eye. Some of these gaps can be addressed through technology as a means of making information interactive. Technology can also allow for collaborative efforts for the discussion of material, it can bring people together without physically being together. Access to information and resources can help close the gap by making information available to everyone.

As important is technology so are life skills and making sure both are available is important to the health and well-being for the productivity of people. Life skills can be taught through technology. Programs for life skills training can reach a wider variety of people if offered using today’s technological advances, as opposed to simply face to face training. People are sometimes embarrassed to admit what they don’t know or need. It causes us to have to admit we are deficient in something and depending on the individual; it could matter. If you are not in the right place in life or have the right mindset to accept whether you need help, if not everyone involved could be wasting their time. Many times, to, people can be more focused on what and who is around them and miss all that the training has to offer. Using technology to offer training can grow the audience and allow for participation to be anonymous therefor creating more participation and allowing individuals to be who they are and ask the hard questions that they couldn’t normally ask in the presence of others. Technology provides so many benefits in allowing people to just be themselves and progress at their own levels with the ability to come out to a group at their own pace. These factors alone add to why it is so important that we make technology available to all and at the same level of quality. We can solve many problems or put a big dent in things if we offer the ability for people to grow with technology and life skills. With a great divide in life skills and the utilization of technological advances it is hard for many to grasp what is available on one side and on the other side it is hard for those to understand the plight of others. Many cannot even fathom that there are vast differences in what is available and to whom. If you have never experienced being without, it will be hard for you to understand how someone can not be able to get or even use technology. If that is all you have been exposed to and all you know than it will be harder to grasp. If you have never experienced the advantages of what technology can provide it will be hard for you to understand how technology can be an aide to you. The same goes for life skills. Whichever side of the spectrum you fall; it has the potential to create a dynamic of misunderstanding of how things are done on the other side and why. Feeling that you do not have the adequate resources to make a change can too cause one to solely focus on how to survive in life, instead of focusing on the opportunities out there to successfully navigate through life and change your situation. Just having the basics are a great start to changing how you see, think and feel about where you are and what you are doing. Life skills are a large part of our thought process that determine how we act and react to things that come our way. In addition, it will help us to think about and determine the best course of action from a logical state of mind.

Technology affects the way individuals communicate, learn, and think. It helps society and determines how people interact with each other daily. Technology plays an important role in society today. It has positive and negative effects on the world, and it impacts daily lives. We are living in an era where technological advances are common. The internet and cell phones are some examples. However, with technological advances, there is a downside to it all. One aspect of technology that has had a great impact on society is how it affects learning. Its made learning more interactive and collaborative, this helps people better engage with the material that they are learning and have trouble with. (Allen, 2019) There are many articles that discuss the importance of technology and learning. Studies show how technology is transitioning learning. Technology can allow for hands on approaches to learning, you can create environments to support ideas. Technology too can eliminate the communications barriers between people. It can allow for interactive exchanges. Technology ushers in fundamental structural changes that can be integral to achieving significant improvements in productivity. Used to support both teaching and learning, technology infuses classrooms with digital learning technology infuses classrooms with digital learning tools, such as computers and handheld devices; expands course offerings, experiences, and learning materials; supports learning 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; builds 21st century skills; increases student engagement and motivation; and accelerates learning. Technology also has the power to transform teaching by ushering in a new model of connected teaching by ushering in a new model of connected teaching. This model links teachers to their students and to professional content, resources, and systems to help them improve their own instruction and personalize learning. (Use of technology in teaching and learning. n.d.).

Based on the large number of underprivileged communities and the amount of people that live at or below the poverty level, shows us that there is a problem within our society. Based on census information, we have “34 million people within the population of the United States that live below the poverty line.” (Semega, J., Kollar, M., Shrider, E. & Creamer, J., 2020) In addition to the numbers, we see and hear about so many impacts of people not having enough to get by, resorting to illegal activities to get money or just doing things that are immoral in order to get money to continue surviving. Some of these decisions are too tied to a lack of exposure to adequate life skills training. Many people live paycheck to paycheck and still must figure out what to pay first and how much to pay on any one bill let alone spread extra monies across multiple bills or even whether to put some away or enjoy the moment. The issue of poverty and the varying degree of social levels are often tied to education, wealth, occupation, income and belonging to a particular subculture or social network. The topics of finances and social status are tied together and without knowledge of how to manage these vital skills, it can have a negative impact in maintaining your life. It is important that we promote life skills as a way of gaining balance in life and allowing for growth.

The question of what I am going to do is a broad stroke; although I have many ideas that I would like to implement. The one that is near and dear to my heart is an idea I have and would like to one day put into play is to create programs that will help individuals and families learn from start, to finish on how to change their lives through life skills training and education with a focus on a willingness to commit to themselves and their future. The program would begin with a commitment by its participants to take part and complete training that would be predicated on the outcome of a series of skills tests and/or evaluations in order to determine where you are and where you would like to go; whether it is a better job or to own a home. The training would be tailored to meet the specific individual goals set forth by the individual and a team of counselors. Each person would have their own individualized training plan and financial goals set that align with their larger goals and objectives. Part of the plan is to teach life skills that would allow the opportunity to get a better job, how to manage money, ways to save money, and even learn a skill. The program would be setup to help; we will cover how to fill out a resume, interview techniques, how to dress for an interview, and discuss techniques on how to interview. The vision is to setup a temporary multi-unit housing complex with an activity center and accessibility to amenities found at some of the more affluent communities, to show what is in the realm of possible. The complex would be setup to house approved families. The idea for the complex would be to provide a safe, clean and healthy environment that focused on growth and nurturing through a community feel. As a part of the success of the plan, there would be security, transportation services and community social activities for participants, tutoring services, health sessions and childcare would be provided on-site while participating in any of the training sessions held on-site. In addition, the goal would be to host all training on-site to make it easy for participants and offer special sessions, tutoring, cooking classes and discussion topics to spark interest in college and trade skills for teens and children.

Barriers are expected on many levels of the program during implementation and lifespan. Some of the projected issues are with funding, personalities and just trying to get people to change what they are used to. Right, wrong or indifferent; people have a hard time with change and doing things the way someone else wants them to do it. Not only are these barriers to overcome; the motivational barrier can be even harder to maintain or overcome. Depending on the length of the program; the time to complete the program can be discouraging not to mention the result. Will the results be everything that it is projected to be and will I complete this program and be successful? Hopefully through the various discussions, training and counseling, participants will know and understand that there may be some obstacles and patience required to fully experience the benefits of all of the hard work required to be successful. Too, without having the money outright, it will be hard to do all that is required to begin and maintain a program of this magnitude. As this program is purely one that will help people, but not really one that will generate income for investors or those with the income stream to support, will there be grants that we qualify for and will the government aid support the program. All concerns can create barriers to the successful start and completion of the program. Another barrier may be participation of the participants in making the program better; asking them to address issues or concerns they may see or feel about things that will help improve the program.

I would like to start a program that will allow members within underprivileged communities the opportunity to take part in and succeed within a safe environment designed to match all the comforts found within a privileged neighborhood and setup to assist them with the development of life skills and with many of the technological advancements found within more affluent neighborhoods. The program would be on an approval basis. Each selectee would have to commit and agree to certain guidelines as prescribed through the program life cycle. Each iteration would be for a term to allow for effective time to complete and make progress toward goals established at the beginning of each program cycle and completely tailored to meet the specific goals of each individual participant. The goal of the program is to offer life skill training, financial management, goals for saving, to teach the importance of financial health and management, how to do the most basic repairs around your home. We will use technology to do much of the teaching, tutoring and provide information technology-based skills training. Selected applicants would go through a series of self-assessments to identify focus areas in order to build a curriculum based on the results of a combination of the assessment results and personal goals. But the goal of the program is to equip participants with the necessary tools to be productive and self-sufficient members of society. In addition to exposing them to the resources available within a privileged community. The purpose of showing them more than the average is in efforts to make people want more and see that with hard work it is attainable. Sometimes people just need a helping hand.

The community will be setup to offer 1-, 2-, 3- and 4-bedroom units. The property will have security onsite around the clock along with a camera system to be sure that everyone there feels safe and understand that technology can offer protection and act as a deterrent to keep everyone safe. Next there will be access keys given to the residents for another added layer of security. Although it may sound like a lot; it is no more than you get in some of the finer apartment complexes. You often have to drive through a gated complex, there is usually a guard, in order to enter the building, you must have an access key or be buzzed in by a tenant. After all of this once inside the building there are cameras throughout for the added safety of it residents. My idea will be no different. Now that everyone feels safe in there complex or unit. It is now time to change and prepare for the evening activities, whether it is attending a training class, a study session, meeting with a tutor, working on a resume or just want to sit around in the neighborhood center, we have it all to accommodate our residents. Every week there will be different activities, technology training and life skills courses. The plan is to address the fun to do life skill courses like, cooking, cleaning hacks, fun tricks to get stains out, arts and crafts or just events that will keep people engaged but at the same time teach skills that will help you grow. Oh, by the way we forgot to mention that we have childcare available during the events and at the same location. Childcare will mostly be provided by a provider with the help on anyone who may have identified this as a goal of theirs. Part of the training will be hands on if there are services that residents expressed an interest in; they will receive on the job training (OJT) as a part of the program. Not only will they have the opportunity to learn, but also have the change to get OJT that will be helpful for those skillsets that require hours of experience int the field before you can work in the field. Activities for all ages will be available, students will have access to tutors on-site. We will teach how to dress for an interview, how to conduct yourself at interviews, even host mock interviews for anyone that would like to participate, even if you want to have a practice interview. Another objective of the program is to teach independence. Those who are interested in home ownership can agree to take part in workshops on how to save and manage money, learn the process of buying a home. From clearing up your credit, to establishing a savings, to preparing you life for the transition to becoming a homeowner, to working with a realtor, understanding a budget, implementing a budget and how to care for your home.

As a participant in the program, you will have access to program sponsored transportation services, childcare, tutoring, self enhancement forums (self-improvement) and counseling services. Various levels of participation will be required in order to meet milestones throughout the program. The milestones will be set by the participants in conjunction with a team of professionals from various backgrounds and with varying levels of expertise. Having different viewpoints will be important in order to win people over and get them participating in the program. Much of the individual planning and training will be based solely on what was outlined for participants of the program. For me, the first step would be to find a location that is conducive to such an environment, that participants feel comfortable in and would want to take part in such a program. The building and area would be a place where the neighborhood feeling would show. There would be access to parks, a lake or lakes, bicycle path, a constant presence of security guards and a periodic police presence of officers just riding through or sitting throughout the neighborhood in order to make the residents feel safe and that they are cared for. We will host periodic community events for people to meet one another and know who their neighbors are. The vision is to provide a place where people live with the advances of modern technology that can help promote a positive, productive lifestyle. We would like to have a place that promotes the excitement of being in the city and with the quite and calm of being in the country. There are plans for an on-site activity center for all ages. The activity center would offer access to modern technology along with tutoring and life skills classes. Technology would also play a role in establishing a future.

Success can be measured on many different levels. The true metric of success depends on the goals of the individuals that are participating in the program. If they feel as if they have accomplished their intended goals and are able to implement what they learned as part of everyday lives in ways that will and feel good about the changes then we have succeeded. From the perspective of a program coordinator, I think there will be multiple phases to measure success of the program with the ultimate measure being successful participants moving on to independent living and becoming an integral part of society. Although there too will be various phases throughout the implementation of the program that success can be measured. The first phase of success will be to find the necessary support in order to start the program and move forward with signing participants up for the program. The second phase of success will be getting participants to agree to take part in the program and agree to the various requirements. The third phase would be in keeping participants motivated and tracking progress through successful completion of various milestones identified throughout the program. Ultimately the goal would be to help and encourage citizens to be productive members of society thus creating their own destinies with the knowledge and training to succeed and grow without feeling like there are limitations because of circumstance. The main objective is to close the gaps on opportunities for under privileged communities. Many just get passed by without ever knowing that are opportunities out there that exist and there are other ways of doing things. Just because you grew up a certain way and only saw things in a particular light. There are means available to help you become better through technology and life skills training. Many times, people just need assistance or the resources to learn and know that they do have opportunities available to them if they are willing to put forth the efforts to be successful.
