{"id":323,"date":"2020-02-28T16:34:44","date_gmt":"2020-02-28T16:34:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/pachacks\/?p=323"},"modified":"2020-08-19T22:21:32","modified_gmt":"2020-08-19T22:21:32","slug":"is-sleep-actually-important","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/loop\/2020\/02\/28\/is-sleep-actually-important\/","title":{"rendered":"Is Sleep Actually Important?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>It\u2019s easy to get caught up in the\nsemester, especially during midterms and finals week.&nbsp; It\u2019s not unusual to walk into the library and\nsee every computer seat occupied or study groups working out practice problems.&nbsp; If you ask everyone there if they\u2019ve pulled\nan \u201call-nighter\u201d before I guarantee at least 75% of students would say they\nhave.&nbsp; Is staying up all night to study\nthe best method to reach top performance?&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research shows that your brain forms\nconnections during sleep to convert short term memories into long term\nmemories.&nbsp; If you\u2019re pulling an\nall-nighter, you\u2019re getting in the way of this process.&nbsp; As sleep deprivation increases concentration\nand focus decrease.&nbsp; Pulling all-nighters\nlong term, or just not sleeping in general, could result in unwanted health\nconsequences like heart disease or high blood pressure.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I first learned this as a\nfull-time student with two jobs, I felt a little defeated.&nbsp; In order to maintain decent grades and make\nsure I paid the bills sleep took a spot on the back burner.&nbsp; If sleep is one of the keys to optimal\nperformance and quality work, then I want to make sure I get the right\namount.&nbsp; This is where I learned the\npower of scheduling!
