Journal Entry #1

My current major is actually cybersecurity! With that being said, I feel like my major is very much intertwined with “cybersecurity technology.” I just switched to cybersecurity, though, so I am still green around the edges when it comes to this field. But, I believe that, since cybersecurity is such a broad major, anyone can take this knowledge and apply it in many different ways. I want to use my major and start working as an artificial intelligence (AI) ethicist, since my minor is in philosophy. Since AI is picking up in popularity, I want to be able to help those attempting to implement it in a way that is ethical. This may be due in part to an underlying fear of robots taking over the world, but that is neither here nor there. Cybersecurity implements many different kinds of technologies to keep protected information safe from unwanted attention. It can be used to protect things on a large scale, such as an entire company, or it can be used on the small scale, like using a VPN on your laptop while in public wifi.

All majors can relate to cybersecurity in one way or another, since most business takes place online now. But there are some that can relate more than others in certain aspects. One major that relates to cybersecurity is criminal justice. This is pretty self explanatory as police forces are known to implement certain systems to watch for cyber attacks and help keep the public safe from them. Another major is fashion merchandising. Fashion merchandising, and merchandising in general, conduct most of their business plans and finances over the internet. That being said, people in this field will naturally want to keep all of their hardworking safe from being lost or stolen. Applying cybersecurity techniques can allow for the user to protect their information from those they do not allow. A third major is public health. Public health deals with trends over periods of time in regards to sicknesses hitting a community. These trends are then used by major organizations, like the CDC, for data collection. The use of public and private keys here would be greatly beneficial so that this information makes it to the intended recipient. The fourth major that relates to cybersecurity is Nursing. Working as a nurse requires you to abide by HIPPA at all times, as one’s medical information is only for those the patient wants to hear about it.
