Pre-Semester Reflection

I am most excited about all of my classes for the first semester. All my classes are finally classes that I seem to have interest in. Hopefully since I feel this way about the classes I am taking I will feel more motivated and excited to go to class and get everything done. As well as starting good school habits for my future college years.

I believe my biggest challenge this semester will be reaching my goals I have set for myself. I am striving to get all A’s for my college classes so all of my hard work will go towards school. But that also means working on my little problems I have that can hurt my grade. For example I am a very bad procrastinator, study very little, and my time management is off the walls. Besides school I am a part of a CHKD Circle Group and I work at Dick’s sporting goods. The group I volunteer with meets once a month and sometimes we have extra events each month so about 5-10 hours in one month. For Dick’s Sporting Goods, I work about 25 hours a week at this job. I am planning on balancing it all by the weekdays/weekends I have off all go towards my school work so that I can stay on top of everything and not have to stress over any of it. In high school I was a part of the CHKD Circle Group still and I played soccer and field hockey as well. No, right now I do not plan on joining any clubs or organizations.

In high school I participated in soccer, field hockey, and the CHKD Circle Group. I had played soccer up until my junior year of high school, COVID showed me it was time to stop. I had been in the CHKD Volunteer Circle for about five or six year, I loved it. I got to do little things to help the children in the hospital, volunteered and worked inside therapy services, and also got to help raise money to help the hospital even more. As for field hockey, it is my favorite sport, I never knew I could fall in love with a sport I barely knew so quickly. I played for my last two years of high school and it was more fun than any of my soccer years. I wanted to join the field hockey club because of how much I enjoy the sport and makes me feel a part of something so special. I emailed the people for the club they never got back to me. I hope that they get back to me soon so I can become a part of their club.

My intended major is nursing. I chose this major because when I got the opportunity to volunteer inside of CHKD that is when I knew for a fact that I wanted to work inside of a hospital with children. Right then I did not know what or how I was going to do it but now I do with the help of talking to some nurses myself.

I am a very passionate person. I will fight for someone when they need it the most and then be by their side when they have not one. I am a great listener and give good advice. While I have also been through and seen a lot so I can put myself in others shoes. I have volunteered in CHKD Norfolk Hospital. I was working in the therapy services department and from there I knew that is where my career will one day be. I saw how all of the doctors, nurses, and any staff worked together and made the kids feel safe and as much at home as possible and I just knew that had to be me one day. My goal in the next 5-10 years is either to be a nurse in a children hospital, children’s mental hospital and or higher up in nurse management. These are all three choices right now because I am not sure where life will take me, but hopefully wherever it does one of these jobs can be my place. I just want to be the nurse that makes a difference in a child’s life. I expect these classes to be more of an interest to me. Which in the end I would think would help me be able to grasp my topics better and pass the classes with flying colors. This is why when I got to pick my courses I tried to pick ones I thought fit my interest the best.  There is for sure a difference between studying and homework. Homework is when you do the work assigned to you before the next class time. While studying is where you put forth extra time and effort to look over the material to do better. In the end if you do both it should both give you the great grades you are looking for. Chemistry I expect to study 3 hours a week. Math I expect to study 3 hours a week. Chemistry Lab I expect to study for 1 hour a week. English I expect to study for 3-4 hours a week. History I expect to study for 2-3 hours a week. For Health Professionals I expect to study maybe 1 hour. Sociology I expect to study for 3 hours as well. I plan on either studying in my bedroom or in the library. I can expect my dog to try and want me to play or squeeze squeaky toys very loudly. But in the library even though it’s supposed to be a quiet place I would think people would still possibly come up to me and ask questions or talk to others. I am planning on avoiding these distractions by pretending I am listening to music in the library so nobody bothers me and then play with my dog and tire him out before I sit down to study.  The best time for me to study is late afternoon early evening. This is because it is when I have the most ability to focus. It is also when I am wide awake and I actually have the motivation to be able to sit down and look at what I have to do for my schooling. Study techniques that work best for me are reading aloud. This one works the best because I can hear what I am reading and it goes through my head and I can focus on it a lot more. Writing things down also helps me study. This technique helps me study because I have to read, spell and say it out loud so this way of studying also seems to stick into my head a little bit better.
