Interview a Teacher

For my interview project, I interviewed Ashley Sherbinsky.  She is a 7th grade teacher at Forest Glen Middle School in Suffolk, Virginia.   From the first day she walked into a school as a little girl, she knew that’s what she knew she wanted to do.  She loved every aspect of being a teacher from the crazy kids, to classroom management, to the summers off.  Ashley went to school at Radford University which is located in Radford, Virginia, where she studied interdisciplinary studies and focused mainly on history and english.  During her time at Radford she was a student teacher for 1st and 4th grade, but she knew she wanted to work with the older age group of children.  Right after she graduated from college she was already having interviews for possible jobs, and she took the first one that she got which was a 7th grade English teacher at Forest Glen Middle School.  Before she could start teaching this group of kids though, she had to take one summer course for her to be eligible to teach this class.  She did the class and she has been doing it for 5 years now.  Her first year of teaching was the most challenging part.  This was because it was a trial and error year, seeing what things worked and what did not.  As well as, how to work with kids who would not listen and or even behave.  Her favorite thing about the job was seeing the light bulb go off in a student when they start to understand what they are learning as well as building the relationship she was able to build with her students.   These things always gave you the biggest feeling of accomplishment she told me.  The basic roles of her job is to create a welcoming environment where the students feel safe and happy, meet various learning needs, establish relationships with students, and classroom management.  Also to keep the children safe and healthy during the time you have them in your care.  Her most surprising aspect of her career was how from one day to another being a teacher no two days are the same.  One day all the kids could be angles and all the work will get done and then the next day every single kid is bouncing off of the walls.  The advice she gave me was that make sure it is something you are truly into, you can not just do it because of the great schedule.  Also take the chance look into other possible positions in the school systems if you know you want to work with kids and do not just limit yourself quite yet to just one career choice.
