If I do not make it into the nursing program, I will be switching my major to Elementary Education. An interesting fact about Elementary Education is that many people who pursue this program like a wide range of subjects and would not mind the chance to teach them to children. The advisor for the elementary education major is Nola Nicholson.
I chose this degree as my parallel plan because working with children is where my heart is and teaching would make that possible every day. It has also always been something that was in the back of my mind, my mom was a teacher, so that drove me away from the idea because I wanted to be different from her. But getting the chance to teach a child to love to learn, will make me fall in love with my career over and over again.
The classes that would need to have to switch my major are public speaking, information literacy for the digital age, the foundations of special education, geometry and human geography. As a way of getting introduced to the career path, I could become a substitute teacher. I have looked into the requirements it takes to become a substitute and all you need is at least 30 credit hours of college classes. So at the beginning of my sophomore year of college, I will begin to sub for elementary age students and get my foot into the door to see if that is something I would like to be doing.
