How does your major relate to Cybersecurity Technology?
Well, as a CYSE major, I would say my major directly encompasses the interdisciplinary fields related to Cybersecurity technology, from the human/sociological standpoint all the way to the technical computer-based information systems and frameworks. I plan to expand on my understanding of basic practices, protocols, procedures, and industry tools as well as how this field correlates with other relevant disciplines like criminal justice, engineering, ethics, and beyond. Once I get more heavily immersed in the field, I plan to apply this knowledge into the ever-expanding and omni-relevant IT discipline, both in learning how to set up/establish secure cyber-networks and what preventative measures can be taken to ensure the integrity of private information and personal data. I hope to be able to extend my learning onto a real-world platform, hopefully one day landing a career with a reputable business or even a branch in the US government. The idea of ethical hacking, to me, is fascinating and I would love the opportunity to take my education and use it against the all-too-familiar types of invasions into users’ personal data and illegal sharing of personal information.
It’s interesting to take a little bit of my previous real-world experience working in technical support for a national media company (Cox Cable), and being a product specialist for one of the largest telecommunications companies in the world (T-mobile) and fully understanding how all the frameworks and structures work together. Now, when I see industry-related terminology like TCP protocols and port numbers, I actually have a well-rounded and functional understanding of what these terms mean, how they act/interact, why they are important, and what procedures accompany them.
