Before watching the video I thought that they would negatively criticize how Hollywood would portray hacking but I was surprisingly wrong. The security analyst was very generous with her movie scores. The examples that were used in the clip were scenes from more recent movies and television shows. Nowadays I think because cyber security incidents are more prevalent, the way directors and screenwriters portray them would be more accurate as well. For example in the show Mr. Robot, the character shows up to a capture the flag competition. In the scene they use a real world hacking conference and also replicate the game that they played at one of the conferences. With the rise in popularity in tech and cyber security I think the abundance of real world examples will help the media portray these incidents more accurately.
I think the media influences how we see cybersecurity because they portray hackers and cyber security incidents similarly across all platforms. The more we see this depiction the more we begin to believe that it’s true. Growing up what I saw in most of the movies and TV shows that I watched, the IT or hacker person would be nerdy people stuck in the basement. They could get into any system in a matter of seconds and most issues can be resolved after the commercial break. When people see this more and more then they will begin to believe that its portrayal of them is true. I also believe the younger the audience the more likely they are to be influenced on what they consume. Media plays a big role in how people outside of the cybersecurity space feel about the people in the field. Not every hacker wears a hoodie 24/7. The amount of time to perform a hack is usually longer than just a couple minutes. I know that producers and directors need to tell and sell a story but the way in which they tell it plays a big part in how the cyber community is viewed.
