In my view, political motives are the most reasonable for cyber attacks since they can be used to gain access to sensitive information or disrupt political opponents. The attack on the 2016 U.S. presidential election by Russian hackers is an example of this motive. Revenge is another understandable motive for cyber attacks as individuals or organizations may seek to retaliate against their adversaries. However, this motive can be dangerous as it may be driven by emotions rather than rational thinking. The recognition motive may not make as much sense because the attacker is not necessarily seeking any tangible gain, and the damage caused may not align with their goals. Entertainment and boredom motives are the least sensible motives for cyber attacks. These motives demonstrate a lack of consideration for the consequences and can cause harm to others. Cyber attacks for entertainment or fun can be irresponsible and unethical, and the damage caused may not be worth the temporary enjoyment gained by the attacker. In summary, while all motives for cyber attacks have severe consequences, some motives are more understandable than others based on the attacker’s goals and potential harm caused by the attack.
