Sport Professional Penpal: Making the Connection

Sian Emslie was born on November 9th, 2002 in England. She has two brothers, Josh and Nathan, and her mother, Jane, and father, Brian, by her side always. She also currently has two huskies named Luna and Athena that she loves very much and says that they are her best friends. Sian grew up in England where she played roller hockey throughout her beginning years of her childhood. At just age 11, she was playing for the national team and traveling all throughout Europe playing different nations. She attended Joy Lane for elementary school and then moved to high school where she started to play field hockey. She began to play field hockey at the age of 12 and by the time she was 15 she was playing for the U16 national team in Europe all the way through to U18 where again, she found herself traveling all through Europe playing other nations just for a different sport this time. Sian attended Repton School and school indoor and outdoor national titles and received A-levels in biology, philosophy, ethics, and physical education before moving to the United States in 2021 where she attended Delaware University, playing Division I field hockey. In 2024, Sian transferred to Old Dominion University to continue her field hockey career and receive her undergraduate degree in psychology. She then pursued her graduate studies in sport management. After the fall of 2025, Sian received a graduate assistant position where she now works for the ODU sport marketing department. In this position, she is in charge of managing all the sports’ marketing efforts at ODU. She will work games and events and plan them out as well. She says that from this position she hopes to move into a higher position within ODU athletics.

Choosing to contact Sian was a fairly easy process for me because I already knew her. I have played field hockey with her for the past two years and we are pretty close friends. I wanted to choose Sian for this assignment because she just recently got the position she is working in and I thought it would be a great way for me to learn about just starting a new job out of college. With her working in college athletics, I thought it would be very beneficial to learn more about her daily work because that is potentially an area that I would like to work in some day. In asking her about being my penpal throughout the semester, I asked her, in person, if she would be interested in working with me throughout the next couple of months. I told her that I would be looking to learn more about her and her position by having interviews with her. She said she would love to do that and was all in on helping me with it. From there, I told her that I would be in contact with the portion of the assignment to get some basic information about her.
