An ethical decision-making model will be used along with application of ethical principles and the American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics for Nurses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Student Approach to Assignment: <\/strong>When approaching this assignment, I reflected on all the clinical patients I had and which one I thought would give me the best ethical issue to discuss. The patient I went with was a labor and delivery patient with severe preeclampsia who was refusing treatment due to her husband being out of town.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Reason for Inclusion of the Assignment in the Portfolio: <\/strong>I included this assignment in my portfolio because it demonstrates my ability to apply critical thinking, ethical decision-making, and professional nursing judgment to a complex patient situation. I evaluated multiple care options using clinical reasoning, all while respecting my patients&#8217; autonomy. I also demonstrated my understanding of nursing ethics, including autonomy and beneficence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Domains 1, 2, 3: Knowledge for Nursing Practice, Person-Centered Care, Population Health Descriptor<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>End of program learning outcome 7: Demonstrates clinical reasoning in making clinical or professional judgments. (Domains 1, 2, 3) (1.1,1.3, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4,3.4)\n<ul>\n<li>In this assignment, I work through a complex patient situation involving severe preeclampsia and refusal of treatment. While assessing the patient&#8217;s decision-making capacity and her understanding of risks, multiple care options were considered, including admission to antepartum and induction. I used clinical reasoning to explain why this patient should receive immediate treatment and reflected on how I would make future improvements to support my professional judgment.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Domain 9 Professionalism<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>End of program learning outcome 41: Apply principles of professional nursing ethics and human rights in patient care and professional situations. (Domain 9) (9.3, 9.4, 9.6)\n<ul>\n<li>In this presentation, I reflected on the principles of autonomy and beneficence. We fully educated the patient on the risks of her leaving and had to respect her autonomy. Her right to refuse treatment aligns with the ethical standard, Provision 1.4, of the Nursing Code of Ethics.
