My current major here at Old Dominion University is Pre-Nursing. My reason for pursuing my chosen major is very personal. I chose this major because like many I want to be the start of change within the healthcare field. I want to lower the rates of maternal mortality rates in African American women. The rates in African American women are significantly higher than any other. As an African American woman myself I want to ensure that African American women feel comfortable walking into places that are considered “safe”. In the healthcare field experience is very important. Although I don’t have much I did participate in the 2-week Junior Volunteer Program last summer at Riverside Regional Hospital. I also plan on getting my Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) this summer before entering my sophomore year to further my experience.
