Workplace Deviance

  • To start, Workplace Deviance refers to deliberate, malicious attempts to sabotage an organization by causing problems in the workplace. An example of this would be if an employee that has gotten fired from their job decides to download sensitive information to show for public display or sell for revenge. In order for an employee to do so they would still have complete access and authorization to the companies system. Work place deviance can leave open doors for cyber attackers to steal information and have access to security systems. If a hacker were to be able to get through to a companies security system it would leave other companies attached to that company vulnerable to attack as well, like how Facebook and Instagram are linked. Cyber technology has created opportunities for workplace deviance because it would be much harder and would take longer to find the source behind a computer compared to in person deviance. Another, and more serious example of work place deviance would be an upset employee that works in the medical field (Hospital) or the criminal justice system (police station or prison). The employee or a hacker would be able to alter medical charts or prison files resulting in misdiagnoses, wrong surgical procedures, release of inmates, and prison misplacement which could create further damage like lawsuits and lives lost. Cyber technology makes deviance easy to execute that’s why limitations should be in effect to reduce damage and to protect companies from attacks.
