Choose a page or diagram from a user manual you believe to be well-executed, and analyze it according to the readings on manuals: choose a segment of the reading and form it into a question for the purpose of analysis as I did with DD Ch. 1 above. 

I had a hard time choosing a user manual that I really liked for a few reasons. I believe user manuals should be pretty self explanatory considering the reading about manuals states, “In general, the purpose of an instruction manual is to familiarize the user with the product and/or to guide the user through a series of steps that lead to the completion of a task.” The goal is of course to begin from start to finish in an easy and effective manner. I had a hard time browsing for something because a lot of user manuals are so boring. When I purchase something that includes the instructions/user manual I personally need something direct and to the point. A lot of user manuals have small fine print and small images followed by paragraphs of writing that I believe can cause someone to lose focus or become frustrated. I think user manuals need to be less time consuming, its best to stick to the topic at hand. Being simplified beats complexity. This user manual is not my overall favorite but I definitely believe that it gets the job done! I like how each step has sections separating one thing from another without confusion. As said in the reading, “When writing instructions, a careful consideration of word choice is important because in some cases, the user’s safety is at risk. ” I think this user manual does a good job with this especially due to the images. The arrows are very direct about where things need to go and how the objects (battery, memory card, etc) need to be inserted properly. In the section, “Using Knowledge of Rhetorical Situation to Make Effective Rhetorical Choices” it states, “Though most instruction manuals rely upon some standard conventions, each instruction manual should be tailored to achieve a specific purpose for a particular audience within a given context.” Audience is very important as their needs need to be met for achievement. After looking at this section in the reading about user manuals I would ask, “how can a user manual be created that has a balance of thorough instructions as well as swiftness and creativity?”
