Critical infrastructures are important to a lot of businesses that operate throughout the country. According to security information watch, “The Department of Homeland Security (DHS)defines critical infrastructures as assets that provide “the essential services that underpin American society and serve as the backbone of our nation’s economy, security and health” (Please). The vulnerabilities related to these are more drastic as if one goes down it can cause all operations to stop. Some of the disasters that can happen include natural disasters that wipe out a facility. Along with natural disasters, there are human vulnerabilities that are present. Some of these include terrorist attacks or people stealing financial assets. “One of America’s more worrying critical infrastructure issues has to do with the fact that major portions of several critical sectors are concentrated in close geographic proximity” (Please). This can be a problem as it can cause more disasters in the same spot. If the spots were spread out it would cause more protection. SCADA is used to help try and mitigate some of the damage that is done from critical infrastructures failing. “CADA systems are commonly used in alarm systems. The alarm has only two digital status points with values ALARM or NORMAL. When the requirements of the Alarm are met, the activation will start. For example, when the fuel tank of a car is empty, the alarm is activated, and the light signal is on. To alert the SCADA operators and managers, text messages and emails are sent along with alarm activation.” (SCADA). This is important as the alarms will alert people using the system that there are potential breakdowns of the systems being used. They have a lot more products such as a supervisor station and a RTU to help with things.
