Becoming a Health Professional During a Pandemic
Abiasaph Maldonado III is a medical assistant currently working for Bon Secours in sixteen different medical offices. Prior to the pandemic or his job, he planned to join the military just like everyone else in this family. However, once he reached college age he chose medicine instead and received his associate’s degree from ECPI. He was inspired to stand out from the rest of his family because he wanted to help people more directly.
At work, medical assistants are responsible for things like rooming patients, checking vitals, giving injections, taking blood, and checking each patient’s medication and medical history. He believes the most surprising aspect of his job is never knowing what a patient might say or do, but it’s outweighed by the most rewarding aspect of his job: providing a safe space for patients to be honest and seek help. This is also a challenging part of the job at times because their stress can weigh on you as well. If he could tell someone going into health one thing he’d say, “Always do your job to the fullest because people need you.”
