Pre-Semester Reflection

Major/Career

  1. What is your intended major and why did you choose this major?

My intended major is Nursing and the reason I chose this major was because I have always been attracted to the medical field but not necessarily to be a doctor. I think becoming a nurse will allow me to broaden my spectrum on what I can do with my career because instead of focusing on one specialty like most doctors, I can experiment with many specialties and see which one suits me best.

2. What skills or abilities do you possess that make this major/career a good choice for you?

The skills and abilities I possess include being very patient with others, working well under pressure, and working well as a team. I am also bilingual in Spanish and English, which can help close the language barrier that a lot of nurses have with patients.

3. What experience, if any, do you have that relates to your chosen major/career?

The experiences that I have include job shadowing with a Nephrology Nurse Practitioner last summer and an internship with an anesthesiologist at Chesapeake Regional Hospital my senior of high school.

4. In what type of setting would you prefer to work?

I would prefer to work in a hospital because I like the organization that hospitals have and how clean it looks. I do not know how to describe it but the feeling of having to go to work and not knowing what will happen and experiencing something new every day is somewhat exciting.

5. What are your career goals (in 5 years/in 10 years)?

My career goal in 5 years is to become a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, but maybe in the future, I could get into becoming a traveling nurse practitioner of some kind.

Of the majors on my top 10 list, I would like to learn more about Nuclear Medicine Technology, Dental Hygiene, and exactly what I need to do to be successful in Nursing.

Transition to College

  1. What do you expect to be the biggest difference between high school and college?

The biggest difference between high school and college would have to be the environment of the classes since now everything is more serious and procrastination is no longer tolerated by professors.

2. What do you expect to be your biggest challenge this semester?

I think my biggest challenge would be managing my time better and not practicing as much as I did in high school.

  1. If you live on campus: What do you expect to be your biggest challenge with moving away to college? OR  If you commute to class: What do you expect to be your biggest challenge with commuting to campus?

The biggest challenge with commuting would be having to arrive at class on time and avoiding the traffic hours when possible.

4. Do you have a job/ or plan to get a job? If so, where? How many hours will you be working per week?

I do plan on getting a job and I would like to work only weekends if possible, but if I have to work weekdays I think maybe one or two days that do not interfere with classes or studying.

Study Habits

  1. Is there a difference between “studying” and “homework”?  Explain your answer.

There is a big difference between homework and studying because homework is there to help you practice a certain topic and should be completed after studying the material. I find studying to be essential in mastering a class and if one resorts to just doing homework then that class will be a huge challenge to pass.

2. How much time do you plan to spend studying for each class every week?

I read that we should have at least 30 hours a week to study for school, but I think that if I study at least 2 or 3 hours for each class with 30-minute breaks, when necessary, then I can be successful.

3. For which class do you expect to spend the most time studying?

I expect to study most for Chemistry, History, and Sociology.

  1. For which class (other than HLTH 101) are you expecting to spend the least amount of time studying?

I think I will study the least in my music class since everything is pretty straightforward.

5. Where do you plan to study?

I plan to study in my designated workspace, which is at my desk in the corner of my room.

6. What potential distractions can you anticipate?

I think some distractions include my phone and tv.

7. How do you plan to avoid these distractions?

To avoid distractions I will keep my phone on do not disturb and keep my tv off while studying.

8. What time of day is your best time to study and why?

The time of day to best study is in the morning when your mind is fresh and in the evening when your body and mind are calm.

9. This Fall, you are in online courses, some of which do not meet at a specific time, how do you plan to manage all of your assignments?

I plan to manage all my assignments with a planner that I keep on my desk and the planner on my phone and laptop.

10. Think about all of your commitments i.e. job, family, social life (from a distance and wear your mask! #ReignResponsibly). How do you plan on balancing your various commitments?

In order to balance my commitments, I need to prioritize what is needed to be accomplished first like during the week school is my priority and since I am at home then my family will have my attention as well. However, weekends will be for more friends, family, and social life experiences.

Learning Style

  1. What specific study techniques do you think work best for you?

The study techniques that work best for me include writing notes in class instead of on my laptop since I feel like I grasp the material better.  I also like to write my thoughts on sticky notes and use those for further references.

2. Do you use different study techniques for different classes?  Provide examples.

I do not use different techniques for different classes and every class has a notebook for notes and a binder to store important papers. I use different colored pens for my notes in every class which I find very helpful when I want to remember the important things said during class.
