However, using it only out of curiosity feels risky, and I do not think it is necessary. Unlike passwords or credit cards, DNA is permanent, and you cannot just easily replace it. If that data is ever exposed in a breach, you cannot change anything about it. I think the benefits only truly outweigh the risks when there is a meaningful purpose, like medical insight, rather than just curiosity about ancestry. Also, many DNA testing packages do not even give you complete or fully detailed information about yourself, while the company still keeps your full genetic data and uses it.

Corporate and Employment Privacy

There is a real concern about genetic discrimination if DNA data is accessed or misused. An employer could potentially avoid hiring someone who is more likely to develop certain health conditions in the future, which I do not think is fair. Even if this is not the intended use, once the data exists, it can be abused in many ways. It is important to have strict rules about how genetic information is collected, stored, and used, especially in the workplace. That is one more reason why you should not use DNA services just for fun or digitalize DNA in general.

The “Hacking Humans” Concept

The permanent nature of biological data changes the way we should think about “human factor” security because it raises the stakes of human error. If someone falls for a phishing scam, they can reset their password, but if they willingly share their DNA, the consequences are permanent and cannot be fixed. This means people need to be more aware and cautious about where they submit their biological data and why. It also shows that the impact of mistakes can last a lifetime.

The Ethics of Curiosity DNA testing can be really useful for understanding health risks or supporting medical research (scientists study diseases).
