Interview a Health Professional

Directing the ER:

Shana Roberts

Clinical Director for Emergency Medicine at Methodist Hospital in Germantown TN

Bachelors of Science in Nursing (RN)

Summary:

My interview was with Shana Roberts who is a clinical director for emergency medicine at Methodist hospital in Germantown TN. During nursing school while applying to internships she was applying for cardiac but was told that they only had emergency medicine, and later she fell in love with the department and had never left. After she had graduated from nursing school, she had done a resident RN program in the Emergency department, and worked bedside for many years. In 2016, Mrs. Roberts had moved up to the middle leadership role, a patient care coordinator, which is similar to a supervisor role in the emergency department up until 2023. In April she was promoted to the clinical director of the emergency department.  As the director, she leads a team with about 105 associates, a leader team with about 5 people, and educator she leads, and under that she leads RN’s, emergency department techs, and phlebotomy teams that keeps the emergency department going. Some barriers that are in the way of keeping a more sustainable practice would be being in the Memphis area, recycling is not prevalent, and the community is not extra cautious with preserving things.

Highlight or takeaway:

Some advice that she gave for people that are interested in the nursing field is to just do it and that the people are needed. What she found surprising was that people can be rude to the nurses and medical staff when they are trying to help them. They hospital that she is working at is trying to be more sustainable by using kits that can reduce waste and labeling things that are able to be recycled.
