Mid-Semester Reflection

Study Habits:

I am doing well in sociology because I will take notes in the class and then read over them to memorize the terms that we have learned. Chemistry is one class that I have to spend more time studying because it is taking me a little longer to understand that chapter that we have learned that day. I am studying that topic we have learned that day, and watching videos like Khan academy when I am home. When the professor has zoom meetings, I will watch the video that the professor has posted to get a better understanding. I will also study with my friend so I can get a different way of explaining the topic that could be easier to understand.

Transition to College

The expectation that I had coming to college was having to study more than you did in high school because you only have 50 minutes in some classes so you have to spend more time studying to fully understand what you have learned that day. The toughest challenge with commuting is the traffic in the morning. I commute from Virginia Beach and the traffic isn’t too bad, but it is bad when having to go to my 8am classes. I leave an hour early on the days I have my 8am class and I sometimes have 10 minutes to get to class because of traffic. Getting connected and involved with the campus is kind of hard because I am not on campus all day, so finding clubs and events is more difficult. The easiest challenge to overcome is what to do during breaks in between classes. During that time I will work on other work for classes so I don’t have to do much when I get home.

Major

Something that I learned about my intended major is that it is a competitive program to get into, but it is a good program. My feelings haven’t changed about my intended major, but I know that I have to work hard in my classes and work for good grades. A minor in public health is something that I am interested in learning more about.

Connecting to Campus

One challenge that I have encountered this semester is there will be events and/or study groups outside of class that I would like to attend, but they are either during a class or later in the day and I am unable to attend. I have a friend that I was friends with in high school that is also in the learning community and majoring in nursing. We have some classes together so we are able to talk about the class and if one of us needs help on an assignment we can help each other. I have not attended an interest meeting for a club because I haven’t heard much about clubs that are at ODU.

Guest Speaker/Field Trips

The guest speakers that I liked the most were Dr. Brown and Dr. Robertson-Jones. They talked about Public Health and Nursing and how they both connect to each other. It tied with nursing because you can find and identify populations, individuals, and families that could benefit from health promotion that are at risk of disability, illness, or injury. Guests that I would like to see is students from the nursing program that have graduated and explain how the nursing program works and what their experience was.
