The first line in my Blog 1 was “Throughout this course I hope to have the ability to be more aware of the world and society around me, as well as how they influence me and vice versa.” I feel as if what I have learned through this course as directly hit this on the head. I’ve learned what in the society impacts my everyday life, even if they seem to have no direct influence to each other. Overall I feel as if I have really seen the importance of Social Psychology and how it seems to be like an onion, every layer you peel back, there’s another deeper aspect that makes you really think about life in general. If I took this class over/again. I would really dive even deeper into the material than I did this semester ( mostly due to having a lot of work in my other classes, if I did I would never leave my desk). This semester I feel like I have grown by taking most of the objectives and putting them into real world translations, and how they make their appearances in my life. In my professional life as a psychology major, I feel as if knowing how much of an impact the outside world has to people individually, I could use this to help explain to those who may not understand and help them see how they are impacted.

I chose this picture because it shows how other people in our society can influence our thoughts/feelings and sometimes that happens without us even knowing.

Throughout this course and looking back over my e-Portfolio, the top three things that I learned all connect in someway. Blog 3 was about how the music people chose connects them to others as well as shows their true self in a way. Assignment 2 was talking about how self could be portrayed in a variety of ways and how you see yourself in different views. Assignment 1 talked about heuristics and how they influence you how to think or what to think. I chose these three concepts because they all seem to fall in line with one another in a way. Such as our music choice depending on who we are with could be a part of how we view ourselves in public as well as what heuristics leads you to believe what are the more socially acceptable forms of music and what not.

I chose this picture of my notes showing what concepts I chose and which ones relate to others.

While reading the article on mating and conflict that occurs in relationships, the section about conflict from infidelity was something that struck my interest. I chose this specific part because of a study I read somewhere that women perceive emotional infidelity as worse and more impactful than physical infidelity while men saw it the other way around. This just shows how biologically and psychologically different men and women are.

Ways Women Upset Men:
-Not giving a straight answer.
-They are seemingly hard to please.
– Compare men to their friends/family.
-Never able to make decisions (about where to eat).

Ways Men Upset Women:
-Not being emotionally available.
-Single minded.
-Not taking the mental work load of the household.
-Comparing women to those on TV or in society.

I chose this popular meme to show how men could potentially upset a woman by looking at another.

Watching the video on Self-Regulation and Emotional Intelligence, I learned that Self-Regulation is the basic leveling out of emotions by breathing methods, and this helps deescalate the fight or flight response that your body is encountering. Emotional Intelligence is the expression, understanding and awareness of emotions within yourself and how you understand others’ emotions. I feel that Emotional Intelligence is an incredibly important part of everyday life and helping work through times of stress, as well as connecting with others and building relationships in the most proactive way. My results of my EQ test showed that my emotional intelligence is OK, it could use some work but it’s got a good foundation. I tend to keep a lot of my “negative” feelings to myself, like worry, anxious, depressed, fear, because I avoid confrontation and negative interactions at all costs. I feel as if one negative interaction or confrontation and that relationship is gone and I have failed, but I need to better understand that relationships can grow stronger through a little confrontation.

In this TedTalk, Kilbourne talks about how many ads are seen degrading, making women out to be sex symbols and photo shopping them to be the ideal woman. In other classes of mine we have learned about this on going issue and it’s something that pops into my head every time i see an ad now, I criticize it and examine it to see what underlying meaning they are putting into the ad to gain attention. Throughout the video, she mentions that men are also used as sex symbols and object in ads but they are far less dehumanized than women. Men are allowed to look human and are photo shopped to look bigger and more muscular, while women look like animations and have unrealistic proportions. The ads below show that women are unimportant objects (Reebok), sex toys (Four alcohol), told how their bodies should be shaped (Warner’s) and how they should look for the beach (Protein World) and finally, the jobs that women and mothers should hold as maids (Mr. Clean).

In today’s society, Advertisements are everywhere we look whether we acknowledge them at the time or not. While many advertisements can be very credible and hold valuable information, many can be misleading and deceiving or just flashy enough to catch someone’s eye in hopes of gaining a customer. Advertisement A below, shows a credible source. This ad was partially a video that showed women using this shape-wear and what it did for them. I believe this is credible because it’s showing a variety of women using the product in real time. Advertisement B is an example of an attractive ad. When I think of attractive ads, I think of makeup ads because they use celebrities to help drawn in the attention of the viewers and showing that if the celebrities use it (Whether they truly do or not, we don’t know) that I should be using it. A lot of celebrity endorsed products and services normally do quite well because in today’s society, who doesn’t want to be a celebrity or at least look like one? Finally is the not credible ad, for advertisement C. I find this ad to be poorly executed. It talks about being fired, or being in the most stressful work environment, with a tie representing a noose. There isn’t much information on this ad about what it is talking about or trying to get at, and I find it not credible in the sense that the object is not clearly stated.

These are the three ads I chose. A is from Instagram, B is from google, as well as C.

Before this assignment, I wasn’t aware that I was able to view exams after I took them to see what I got wrong and possibly why. Looking over this exam and the questions I missed, I realized that I make very careless mistakes. Without seeing the other possible answers, when I looked up the correct answer, I don’t understand why I chose the answers I did. I feel like my test anxiety really hindered my performance. I also feel as if I was ill prepared for this test. My notes were few and far in-between so I now know I need to take notes better and space out my review sheet while I am working through the week of the exam.

I chose this photo because I feel as if this is a perfect representation of how I am when I am taking exams. Being better prepared will possibly help me feel better when testing.

I strongly believe that music preferences of people has a connection to the person themselves. I also believe that a person can have a wide variety of music choices based on their mood, the people they are around and even their outlook on their life or life in general. I like to think of music as a way to connect with other people. My husband and I have the same varying taste in music from country to metal. I share an interest in hip-hop music with a few of my friends as well.

My Soundtrack

  • Husband – My Best friend (Tim McGraw)
  • My Anxiety/Depression – Panic Room (Au/Ra)
  • Parents – Babygirl (Sugarland)
  • Hometown/Left for the Navy – Rearview Town (Jason Aldean)
  • Outlook on life – Try Everything (Shakira)
  • Traveling – Heads Carolina, Tails California (Jo Dee Messina)
This photo of my husband and I. Represents my love for traveling as well as the love for my husband/best-friend.

Overall, I believe I am a well-rounded student. While I might miss and assignment here and there due strictly to my terrible memory, I feel as if all the work I do submit is to my best ability for the most part. I am an anxious person and that is why I answered to number 7 and number 10 on the GSE as a “Not at all true” because I find it extremely hard to remain calm in stressful situations and not automatically think the worst case scenario, these were my two lowest scores. My overall confidence level as a student alone is around a seven out of ten. I feel as if I could put even more effort into my work, but I am also confident that I do better than most. Factors that could help my confidence level would have to be getting my anxiety under control and learn how to cope with stress in a more reasonable and healthy way.

I simply chose to post my GSE Scale to show how i answered and hopefully throughout this semester I can redo this GSE and see what improvements I have accomplished.

Throughout this course I hope to have the ability to be more aware of the world and society around me, as well as how they influence me and vice versa. Throughout social cognition module, I learned how basic information humans take in can greatly impact their understanding and beliefs of the world around them, such as heuristics. Social perception, liking, love, & other close relationships are and will be the most interesting to me. As a person with social anxiety, I’m intrigued how people act and perceive others as well as how relationships have an impact on people and how they view themselves. Social perception really opened my eyes on how to read body language and nonverbal cues that people give off that could possibly help aid in relaxing me in public when I feel as if everyone is paying attention to me and talking about me, when they really are not.

Availability Heuristic

I chose this picture above, because it is very prevalent in today’s media, but with the Corona-virus, and not Ebola. While this disease does pose a threat to health, there are an abundance of other issues that are ignored that are more harmful and much more likely to happen, like alcohol, tobacco and unhealthy foods. This represents the availability heuristic perfectly.
