Writing Assignment #1

A primary article is an original article that doesn’t include review articles within. The article is about new findings, not a report of someone else’s findings. Primary articles usually include specific sections that split the article into different areas like introduction, methods, results, discussion, and references. Lastly, primary articles are typically peer-reviewed before they are published, meaning they are reviewed by an expert in the field to verify all information in the article is appropriately stated.

A review article is different from a primary article in that it is not new findings, but merely a summary of what research is known about a particular subject. Review articles can be more helpful than primary articles because they can give you a broader range of information about a topic, rather than a singular finding in a primary article. The downside to review articles, however, is that their broad stroke approach may prevent a reader from obtaining information on a specific subject within a topic.

Peer-reviewing, as what was stated in the first paragraph, is the process of an expert in the author’s field reviewing an article before it is published. This is performed to assure the article is accurate and original in its information. Peer-reviewing doesn’t only include simply reading over an article, it also involves revising the article itself to make the article as accurate as both the original authors and reviewers can make it. One thing to note, however, is that peer-reviewed articles can have non-peer reviewed articles within it as a source, meaning not all peer-reviewed articles have 100% verified references.

The primary article is the one labeled “MicroRNA in diagnosis and therapy monitoring of early-stage triple-negative breast cancer.” This is because it outlines a specific study performed and contains the five sections of introduction, methods, results, discussion, and references. The review article is the one labeled “Circulating microRNAs in Medicine.” The reasons this one is the review article is it does not contain the five sections of a primary article, and more specifically, the article explains broadly about the uses of microRNAs in medicine instead of discussing a specific study.
