Artifacts 5

Module 8

For module 8 we were given a list of adjectives, and asked to pick two and attach them to the list of racial or ethnic groups. Then we are asked to review survey results from different people during different years, and compare them with ours. This assignment will reveal the different stereotypes people associate with racial and ethnic groups, and how they have changed over time. I noticed a shift in stereotypes throughout the years, which could be due to the change in our society becoming more opening and accepting.

I selected this module because I found it interesting how there was an clear change in stereotypes through the years,  I was not expecting that before analyzing the data.  I liked this assignment because if proves that yes, we all stereotype, but they are not accurate since people have different stereotypes of the same racial and ethnic groups. I have provided an image of my list of racial and ethnic groups with two stereotyped adjectives.

Module 12

For module 12 we were given 25 different statements. Then instructed to circle all the statements we believe that indicate aggression. The questions ranged from obliviously aggressive or not, to questionable aggressive. Through this assignment I learned that everything is circumstantial. Yes, some statement may be aggressive or violent, but I have not circled them because of he circumstance is in occurring in. Although a solider killing the enemy during a battle, is very violent and still murder I would not circle it for aggression, because that is what the solider job is. However, a serial killer murdering many people would be aggressive.

I choose this module because it required more thought than I originally anticipate. This module seemed to have one simple institution, however I soon began to realize it was not simple. I started to find myself questioning whether I was making the right decisions, and if they were constant. I notice I have a different view on aggression with each statement, because of that I realized that I had to define what aggression meant to me in order to accurately determine if the statements are aggressive or not. I provided a picture of the statements and ones I selected as being aggressive.

Module 9

For module 9 we were asked to examine the personal ads on Craigslist. When examining the ads look for trends in what men are looking for in women and vise versa. Then we were to create a table based on our findings. The table should indicate the top three characteristics that each gender seeks in a significant other. Through this assignment we can future learn the different desires men and women have when seeking a partner.

I really enjoyed this module because of how actuate my finds compared with Hayes’ findings from 1995. Hayes stated how men are seeking a young attractive women. While women look for financially stable men. Through my findings I have notice that women are more concerned with the man’s personally and status, and developing a relationship. Where as men just want to find someone good looking for sexual purposes. Similar to what Hayes has found. I have provided an image of the chart I created.

Module 7

During this module we were instructed to participate in two surveys. The first one was about personal attitudes towards, where you selected a number on a scale of 1-4 where you agree with the given statement. Next, you took a behavior survey, where you stated yes or no if you follow the given behavior. Lastly, you were asked to reflect on the results of both surveys. Through this we learned how our attitudes towards certain subjects may not match our behaviors.

I liked this module because I felt that it was very effective at delivering the point. I also learned that I contradict myself, but most people do. This module allowed me to reevaluate myself slightly. I learned how my actions do not always match my beliefs, and how that is something I have begun to work on and improve. I have included an image form each survey taken. The questions I have choose to display are contradicting of each other.

Module 10

During this module we were told to break a social norm. I chose to wear my work uniform on inside out and backwards for one hour during my shift. When violating the norm we were tasked a observing those around us and how they react. Through this activity we have learned how powerful social norms are, and that in society our behaviors are reflective upon other’s actions, and what the majority perceives to be normal.

I selected this module as my top artifact because it was the one I was most interactive with, and enjoyed the most. Although, I was very embarrassed to break a social norm, I was much more enjoyable actually getting people’s real reaction, rather than reading about it in some article. This was a fun module, that also got the academic point across. I have included a picture of my outfit while breaking a social norm.
