Week 12 – Journal Entry 14

According to Andriy Slynchuk, there are eleven everyday things that you may be doing online that are illegal. Out of the eleven, I have chosen my top 5 and will explain in this journal entry. They are collecting information about children, sharing passwords and personal information about others, using torrent services, recording a VoIP call without consent, and illegal searches on the internet.

Collecting information about children in this context is talking about surveys and behavior patterns. Children under the age of 13 are protected under the Children’s Online Protection Act. Sharing other people’s passwords, photos and other information can be malicious because you could be giving stalkers or other dangerous people valuable information. Using torrent services takes sales away from artists, and illegal searches on the internet enables illegal sites and organizations. Recording a VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) without consent is not only illegal, but is also dismissible in court.
