Week 5 Journal Entry

There are many motives for cybercrime, and I have listed seven of them in order of what I think makes the most sense, to what makes the least sense. They are from most sense to least sense money, revenge, politics, boredom, entertainment, recognition and multiple reasons. Money is an incredibly powerful desire, and a lot of cases that list other reasons as the real motive still contain a payout of some kind. Politics are a close second, as power brings not only desire, but money as well. Revenge is high on the list due to it being a crime of passion, which motivates people in powerful ways. Boredom is not what people might think at first. It has to do with internet users becoming bored and turning to attention-seeking measures in order to be fulfilled or entertained. This can open doors for cyber criminals to obtain personal information, pictures, and even lead to trafficking. I listed entertainment close to boredom because cybercrime can be motivated by entertainment by both victims and criminals. It can be a criminal seeking entertainment, or a potential victim seeking entertainment and putting cyber hygiene aside for a laugh or engagement. Some hackers want recognition, but I feel this is not as powerful as some of the others mentioned. Multiple reasons kind of covers everything else, and the odds-and-ends motivators that are more rare.
