Protecting Availability

Protections I would implement to ensure availability of my systems would include keeping my systems current and updated as necessary, having a failover/backup system, and the use of RAID.

Keeping systems updated is essential for bug fixes and peak performance. This is a simple security measure to protect from threats and ensure continued compatibility, resulting in continued system availability. Secondly, a failover/backup system would be required. I think of it as the same as having a backup generator incase of a power outage. This way, if there is a disruptive event or outage, the systems will automatically shift to a backup component. This will ensure both availability and prevention of data loss. Lastly, I would implement the use of RAID. I would start by determining which RAID level is best dependent upon the needs of my company. I would then take the necessary steps for implementation once a determination is made. Since RAID uses multiple hard drives to mirror and store data, it would be beneficial to have in place incase one drive stops working. If this happens, there will be additional copies of data, thus ensuring availability of my systems.
