{"id":301,"date":"2025-11-20T04:58:15","date_gmt":"2025-11-20T04:58:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/masonph\/?p=301"},"modified":"2026-01-21T00:02:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-21T00:02:11","slug":"vulnerabilities-of-critical-infrastructure-systems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/masonph\/2025\/11\/20\/vulnerabilities-of-critical-infrastructure-systems\/","title":{"rendered":"Vulnerabilities of Critical infrastructure Systems 11\/9\/25"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Mason Phillips<br>CYSE 200T<br>Professor Duvall<br>November 9, 2025<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vulnerabilities of Critical infrastructure Systems<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>BLUF: The digitization of critical infrastructure including agriculture, water systems, and<br>waste management, has opened vulnerabilities for cyber-attacks; however, these attacks<br>can be mitigated through SCADA applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Overview<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The digitization of critical infrastructure such as agriculture, water systems, and waste<br>management has brought upon the possibility of these systems suffering cyber attacks that<br>can cripple not just a singular part of it but the entire system itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How SCADA helps to mitigate risks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) helps to mitigate risks of attack and<br>reduce risk of compromission of infrastructure through recognizing specific risks to these<br>systems, implementing technical and operational controls, and ensuring resilience and<br>recovery so that in the case of an attack the systems can be quickly recovered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Issues with SCADA<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The security of SCADA systems are constantly being questioned as they are a target for<br>attack. A major possible threat to the SCADA systems are unauthorized access to software,<br>or any other issues that could affect the host machine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Conclusion: SCADA systems are necessary for the security and risk mitigation of cyber-<br>attacks in critical infrastructure regardless of whether it is a target for attack itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sources<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Amos, Z.
