Introduction

 This review examines “Developing Metrics to Assess the Effectiveness of Cyber Security Awareness Program” by Chuadhary, Gkioulos, and Katsikas (2022). This article explores the dire need for vigorous evaluation of frameworks in cybersecurity awareness programs (CSA) to determine their effectiveness and to continue improving. 

Social Science Principles and the Study’s Core

This study mainly focuses on science principles, particularly those  related to behavior change. The authors explained how cybersecurity awareness is not about knowledge gain, but about using the information learned to better behavioral changes. The study does acknowledge the complexity of human behavior and how different factors can change an individual’s security practices.

The study’s main research question is about identifying the appropriate measures and methodologies to figure out the effectiveness of CSA programs. The authors argue that without standard metrics, it becomes difficult to properly evaluate a program, which in turn makes it difficult to show the value and return on investments (ROI).

Research Methodology

To address this question, the researchers cooked up a 32 paper systematic literature review. The review’s goal is to identify the factors used to measure the effectiveness of CSA and the methods used for measurement. This study also adapted the European Literacy Policy Network’s (ELINET) four indicators (impact, sustainability,  accessibility, and monitoring) to construct a complete framework for CSA evaluation.

The data analysis mainly involves combining and summarizing the results from the studies they reviewed. The authors gathered factors from these studies and grouped them together. Knowledge, attitude, behavior, usability, interest, and added value. They also categorize the different methods used to evaluate the programs, like surveys, tests, interviews, and observations.

This study doesn’t specifically focus on the unique challenges, concerns, and contributions of marginalized groups within the context of cybersecurity awareness. But it does recognize the need for personalized evaluation approaches based on diverse needs and situations. These evaluations are critical to ensure that the CSA programs are inclusive and effective for everybody. 

Overall Contributions to Society

The article makes a big contribution towards society because kit advocates for a more rigorous and better structured approach to evaluating cybersecurity awareness programs. These studies will greatly benefit society by improving knowledge, shaping appropriate attitudes, and driving positive behavior change. 

Conclusion

This article effectively underscores the need for more through evaluation in cybersecurity awareness programs. By creating clear frameworks and practical measures, it helps organizations determine the effectiveness of their program and make improvements. The author’s insights on social science principles, mainly focusing on behavior change, adds valuable information that could help many programs  around the world.
