Cyber technology has created several new opportunities for deviance in the workplace. It has created new ways to do things other than work; when your work involves using a computer, it can be easy to get distracted by social media or online shopping, also on the computer. Data theft is easier than it was before computers became so prevalent; with all of the company’s information available, it can be tempting to inappropriately look up information on an acquaintance or download the entire database to sell to spammers. As systems become more and more complex, it also becomes more difficult to reliably limit an employee’s access to only what they need for their work. Finally, Internet connectivity at work has created the possibility for software and music piracy; it may seem safer to download at work, where Internet activity may not be monitored.
