Blog Post 2: PenPal; Making the Connection

I have met many people in my life, but never I have I met someone so committed to their sport, that he strived to be a part of them. For those that do not live in the Hampton Roads area, this is Marco Myers. Mr. Myers is the Senior Director of Game Entertainment and Fan Experience for the ECHL (East Coast Hockey League) Norfolk Admirals. Marco Myers has been with the Admirals for six years and has been an inspiration to the local fans ever since he has made a name for himself.

History of Marco Myers

Marco Myers was born and raised in the Hampton Roads area and has grown up to love sports. He is a Detroit fan (Lions and Red Wings fan, sorry about the lions). While he was a Detroit fan, he’s also grown to love the local ice hockey teams, the Hampton Roads Whalers and the AHL and ECHL Norfolk Admirals. As he became a success with coaching and mastered level five in USA hockey for coaching, he started to become a sales rep for a Vector. As he progressed with his experience, started to become more and partnered with the Admirals when they came back into the ECHL. Marco interned for the Admirals in 2018 and climbed his way up into what he is now.

Past Experience

  • Graduated from Old Dominion with a Bachelors in Sports Management
  • Head Coach for Chesapeake Destroyers
  • Assistant Coach for U14 Whalers
  • Assistant Coach for ACHA DIII ODU
  • Private Coach for Ice Hockey
  • Interned for the Admirals as Game Operations/Community Relations
  • In-Arena Host/Group Sales Account Executive

The Connection

Normally most people would have to wait for weeks for a response with a professional in the sports industry due to hours of work. However, Mr. Myers and I go a bit ways back. As above he used to be a coach, and I remember he coached against me rec team and will say he was a really good coach. Fast forward to a decade later, I volunteered to be a Norfolk Admirals Ice Crew member for partly in the season. One of the first people I met at the Scope Arena and introduced me was Mr. Myers. By that time he was an intern and in a small group of people with the game entertainment. He was my “boss” per say around that time and I did that volunteering job for two years until COVID hit. Before I stopped, Mr. Myers and I exchanged contacts, but unfortunately we dropped out of communications. Fast forward to today, I am in Old Dominion and he is where is he is today and when I contacted him to be my Pen pal for the semester, he agreed with confidence
