Journal entry #14

In this article, author Andriy Slynchuk outlines eleven things internet users may be doing online that are actually criminal offenses. These are:

The five most serious of these violations (in no particular order) are as follows: first, recording a VoIP call. Not only is this an invasion of privacy, it could be used to smear the other person by isolating sound bits out of context or something of the like. Second, collecting information about people younger than 13 could be a crime but that would depend on the context of the searching. Third, illegal searches, much like the collection of information on minors, would also depend on the searches. Sex trafficking, for example, should be investigated when at all possible. Fourth, using copyrighted images and passing them off as your own is another serious offense that should not be tolerated. If it is artwork, then there is an artist who put work into that piece and it is reasonable to ask compensation if their work is used. Fifth, using other people’s internet networks should not be tolerated. This is especially true if their internet usage is being monitored and not just used.
