Journal Entry #2 – Explaining principles of science relating to cybersecurity.

There are 6 Principles of Science when it comes to Cybersecurity; Relativism, Objectivity, Parsimony, Empiricism, Ethical Neutrality, and Determinism. Each of these relate to Cybersecurity in their own way.

Relativism in Cybersecurity ties everything together in terms of how it’s affects nearly everything we do. The technology used in the educational system, healthcare system, and criminal justice system and several other aspects of general society all require some level of Cybersecurity in order to function properly.

Objectivity in Cybersecurity touches on how certain perspectives in society could/should be addressed. While science exists to advance knowledge, cybersecurity can find itself in grey areas when it comes to privacy issues. In the grand scheme of things, policies may be introduced to help the public from an objective standpoint, but opinions are likely to arise where they are not needed.

Parsimony, unironically, may be the easiest to explain in Cybersecurity. It would be beneficial to keep things as simple as possible, especially for the average user. A safe, secure, easy to use software would be the most ideal for the public.

Empiricism relates to the experiences that scientists have and the information gathered can be verified through said experience. Understanding how viruses work or how a certain program works to defend against said virus can be fully comprehendible when experienced firsthand.

Ethical Neutrality means that while working in the Cybersecurity field, its imperative that ethical standards are followed while performing research, lest running the risk of breaking several ethical laws involving privacy or other sensitive topics.

Determinism in Cybersecurity is referring to human behavior, believing that it is caused or influenced by previous events. Questions like why a hacker would attempt to steal information or why someone wouldn’t change their password after being hacked would both fall under the Determinism category.
