Journal Entry #5 Individual Motives Ranking

  1. Money- This makes the most sense to me because it’s the reason why mostly anyone does anything. People work for money, commit crimes for money or various other things for money. If someone has found an easy way to get lots of money through cybercrime, it makes the most sense to me that they would take that route.
  2. Revenge- I think a lot of people let their anger get the best of them and go too far with their actions. I don’t agree with using revenge as motivation to commit a cybercrime, but I understand.
  3. Political- This falls slightly under revenge because it can fall in the same field of emotions like anger but political motivation can also mean you would just want your party to be in power, but to me that usually doesn’t benefit the individual. It mainly effects the opposing party and the consequences are minimal in the end.
  4. Recognition- This could stem from not having attention when you’re in school or something of that nature. However, it take very extreme circumstances for someone to have this type of motivation and I don’t feel it’s strong enough to be put further on the list.
  5. Entertainment- I don’t like this reason very much. It doesn’t make very much sense to me, but I suppose if you try to put yourself in the shoes of someone who just wants to make bad things happen, it would make more sense.
  6. Multiple Reasons- A random grab bag of reasons doesn’t necessarily count as motivation to commit crime. I feel that if you’re looking for a reason, you could use your skills to do something more constructive.
  7. Boredom- There are several things to do in the world besides commit cybercrime just because you’re bored. If boredom is the gateway for you to commit cybercrime, you’re just a bad person in general.
