In the blog for this assignment, there are 11 things that the average person does online that unbeknownst to the individual, is illegal. Each of against the law in their own way, however, I believe that 5 of these items are more severe than the rest. These offenses will be listed from most severe to least severe.
At the top of the list, I believe that collecting information about children would be the most illegal thing. There is no information that you would need on children that would be useful to anyone. Typically collecting information on children would lead one to believe that there ulterior motives like identity theft, collecting information on the childs’ home for a potential robbery or in some cases, pedophilia.
Second down the line would be faking your identity online. Using a fake identity to grant you access to places you wouldn’t normally get to is almost identical to forging a key to get into someones’ home. You gain access to information that only a select few should be able to have and the information gathered could be used for malicious intent.
Third on the list would be using torrent services. Not only is this unsafe for most devices but when you download using torrent services, this is actualy a form of theft. You are circumventing the purchasing process by downloading via torrent and while one person doing it could cost the creator only a few dollars, millions of people doing it costs…millions. It’s a hassle for companies to manage and while technology had advanced enough for most companies to crack down on most torrents, new ones are being develolped every day.
The fourth thing would be bullying and trolling online, which is something that many, many young adults do. An egregious example would be something called Swatting. Swatting is when you call in a false threat to an individuals home that would call for an emergency S.W.A.T. team to raid that home. Most of the time this is done when someone has a short temper online and they feel that this is the only solution to “get back” at their opponent after losing an argument or an online match.
The final item would be illegal searches on the internet. This is listed for obvious reasons, but most people don’t understand that simply looking for certain things can get you put on a list. For example, looking up bullets for research for a project or firearms for something separate may be fine, but looking up those things with important government buildings or public figures can be considered a very serious threat as you may be attempting to put someones’ life in danger.
