Article 1
In the International Journal of Cybersecurity Intelligence & Cybercrime, the article Understanding the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Cybercrime, I will be reviewing several topics that this article covers.
This article touches on 3 social science principles: Determinism, Ethical Neutrality, and Relativism. Determinism is described by establishing that the offenders mentioned in the article committed the crimes for a specific reason or in other words, the crime was caused by a preceding event. Ethical Neutrality is a key point in this article since it deals with deepfakes. While not directly mentioned in the article, the implications of having to investigate a crime dealing with deepfakes involves investigating the personal life and researching personal information about the victim that had the deepfake made in their image. Relativism is apparent in this article because of the response to cyberattacks. In the second study of the article, it is explained that GPT could be utilized to simulate target responses to social engineering attacks. This response could be the catalyst to having a standard procedure in dealing with phishing attacks if proven to be successful.
The hypothesis for this article implies that due to human behavior and advancements in technology, society is becoming more vulnerable to cyberattacks that involve deepfakes. An important question that is asked is what types of personality traits in human behavior are more susceptible to social engineering attacks. These traits include naivety, carelessness, and impulsivity. The research methods used to collect this information was through experiments using GTP-4 in order to study responses to social engineering attacks. Their results that they received was finding out what personality traits were resistant to cyberattacks. Traits like extraversion and high openness to experience were the main ones noted in the article.
This article relates to a recent topic we touched on in class in regards to the psychological principles of cyber offending. The reasons why offenders committed crimes in the metaverse included financial gain or sexual gratification which begs the question of how they got to that point to begin with. The reasoning may not be concrete but the motivation for one of these crimes revolve around money which is what we went over when reviewing individual motivation.
This topic relates to the several marginalized groups that include the uninformed or unaware. Deepfakes can fool several people that do not even know that they exist. There are also people that are of their existence but would not necessarily know how to spot one. This study would benefit society by hopefully informing hundreds, if not thousands of people understand the criminal motivation behind deepfakes and other attack involving A.I. By having this information, people can be more aware of scams online and therefore be better prepared.
