Mid-Semester Reflection

A class I’m doing well in is Elementary Statistics, because my professor does a really good job explaining the concepts during class notes. A class I needed assistance in was Chemistry, however on my Exam 2 I got a 101, compared to my first exam grade which was a82. A change I made was looking at YouTube videos for additional help with concepts, and I went to office hours once too. My expectations coming to college was that college classes will be hard. These expectations have not come to fruition, because with proper time management you can learn how to manage the courses while still enjoying a night out with your friends. The college experience is not that different from what I expected. Something that surprised me is there are always assignments you can do every day, the statement “I have nothing to do”, is not practical. The toughest challenge with moving away from college is learning how to save your money. Back home, I worked every day starting my junior year of high school so I could buy anything I want whenever I want. Now, however, I have to be more limited with my spending. My parents are also trying to teach me budgeting skills, so they moved all my money to a savings account. So, if I need more money to spend, I have to call them and ask if I can get money into my checking account. Easiest challenge to overcome is being homesick. If I ever feel homesick, I just call my parents and talk to them for a few minutes. Something I learned about my intended major is that the grading scale is different once admitted into nursing school. At first, I was nervous about how competitive the nursing major was, and afraid that I’m not going to be smart enough or get the grades I need to be admitted into the nursing program. However, over these past weeks, I can tell that some of my peers, essentially my competition at the same time, don’t take their classes as seriously as they should be, nor are they trying hard academically. One thing I’m interested in learning about is criminal justice, however nursing is still what I’m most interested in. One problem I encountered this semester was making it to my 2:00 p.m. class after getting out of my history class at 1:50. However there’s the lime scooters at ODU I can use to make it to class on time. Someone who has helped me so far in this semester is my resident assistant DJ. He checks in with us and talks to us about how our semester is going, and gives us helpful tips and resources. I also decided to not get involved in clubs this semester because I wanted to focus on my courses.
