Review the articles linked with each individual motive.  Rank the motives from 1 to 8 as the motives that you think make the most sense (being 1) to the least sense (being 7).  Explain why you rank each motive the way you rank it.

  1. Money– Financial gain is a huge motivator. Money can have a huge effect on a person’s life and is universally sought after.
  1. Revenge– Revenge is a personal motive that drives many to commit crimes. The need to get even or the feeling that you have been wronged can be a motivator to commit a crime.
  1. Political– Committing a crime for a political motive can make someone feel like they have a just or noble cause.
  1. Multiple Reasons– There can be more than one reason that led to committing a crime. A person might have social pressure along with any other of the motives mentioned here.
  1. Entertainment– The thrill of committing a crime can be addicting. Some people are willing to place themselves in danger or risk high stakes in order to feel a rush.
  1. Recognition– The need for bragging rights can motivate someone to commit a crime. However, confessing to your crimes is not a smart way to not getting caught.
  1. Boredom– This is a less likely motive as it’s a very short-lived cure. However idle minds tend to find a way into trouble.
