How has cyber technology created opportunities for workplace deviance?

The use of cyber technology has created many opportunities for workplace crimes to take place. There have been many instances of corporate espionage or illegally trading of company secrets in order to gain an edge over a corporate rival. With so much information at the fingertips of employees who are trusted with proprietary secrets it’s not a surprise that some see it as an opportunity to make an easy buck. With the advantages that cyber technology provides such as the easy access to information and efficient transfer of data through a network it can lead to some workplace deviance. The more technology a company employs the more vulnerable its systems can be. Employees can expose the whole workplace to malicious content if they are not cyber security conscious. One mistake can cost a company by slowing or even stopping productivity due to a virus or other malicious code downloaded from an infected email or site. This can be done by accident or even on purpose in order to cause harm to an organization. Cyber technology can also be used to target other employees’ personal information. Employees personal information that is stored for pay role or other reasons can be stolen and used to steal the identity of that person. This information can be stored for years and used later in order to stop suspicion of another person. Many individuals are unaware their personal information has been stolen until someone starts using it to open line of credits in that person’s name. Cyber technology can be a critical part of a business success. However, there will always be those who are willing to use it for personal or financial gain. This is why a strong cybersecurity plan is required to limit access and hopefully prevent possible cyber deviance in the workplace.
