Cyber harassment and cyber bullying are a major problem that often spans all age groups but is especially prevalent amongst school age children. As technology has imbedded itself into our everyday life it is basically impossible to get away from a bully’s grasp. Through the use of social media, instant messenger, and many other social platforms have given bullies many different outlets in order to harass their victims. With technology being so imbedded in our everyday lives makes it increasingly difficult for victims to escape the reach of their bullies. With forty nine of the fifty states having some version of legislation in effect to add some protection against these acts. However, this only proves the need to increase awareness into the real-life effects of both cyber bullying and cyber harassment. Real legal consequences for committing these acts should be taught to people starting at a young age. Also, educating people in how to deal with cyber bullies and harassers could go a long way in lower the number of instances. Technology classes that teach how to set up privacy settings and how to limit other access to your social media profiles could help limit bullies access to their victim’s information. However, this is a larger issue than just educating people about profile setting. This problem can only be solved at the family level. Teaching children that bullying or harassing someone is an immoral act must come from within the family. Most bullies are just projecting their own insecurities onto their victims. Monitoring your children’s internet activity can also have a large effect on the bullies’ mentalities. Also, if other acts don’t stop a bully, then some sort of costly legal action should be taken. This is a real issue that should be a top conversation amongst parents and their children.
