Ars Poetica – Homework

I chose “Because You Asked about the Line Between Prose and Poetry” by Howard Nemerov as my representation of poetry. This poem is a great example of what poetry is and how writing any form of literature can be fun. This poem is insanely small and filled with rhymes with possible ulterior meanings. This poem is explaining that through a few lines and several vivid images, poetry can tell a whole story. While prose, on the other hand, needs multiple paragraphs to get a point across. In my opinion, poetry is a form of creative expression in which little is said, but the meaning can go above and beyond. Poetry makes people think; it’s creative, it’s expressive, and everyone can write it. People can become creative with their word choice, the amount of lines used, etc. It’s almost like a rhyming freewrite. Honestly, poetry is pretty funny considering anyone can say anything and it can be seen as a form of art. I chose this poem not because of its literal meaning but for its structure.

I have decided to use song lyrics that I have discovered recently. As soon as I heard this part of the song, I instantly had to take a picture of the words in front of me. In The Weeknd’s “The Party & The After Party,” he states, “Got me drowning in your love, got me drowning in the mist. Give me right attention or I’ll start drowning from my wrist.” Even though the lyrics are serious, I love how deep they are. This little poem means that he’s so infatuated with this person that if they don’t give into what he wants, he’d become a little extreme and harm himself. In older forms of literature, characters have killed themselves or threatened to harm themselves for the sake of “love.” I believe that this is a little poem due to the rhyme scheme. Since finding this song, I have listened to it multiple times. I randomly came across the song one day when my playlist was on shuffle. I like the “poem” because of how deep it is and because it reminds me of previous literature pieces involving unrequited love. I tend to be interested in things I can consider deep or something that will make me philosophical afterwards. These lyrics made me stop and think for a while.
