Week 4 Journal

Review Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and explain how each level relates to your experiences with technology. Give specific examples of how your digital experiences relate to each level of need.

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs can be applied to technology in so many ways, shaping how we interact with digital tools in daily life.

At the physiological level, technology helps meet basic needs through apps that track food delivery services, and fitness wearables monitoring health. Examples could include my wearing a smartwatch to track the steps and sleep pattern.

For safety needs, cybersecurity is essential. Strong passwords, two-factor authentication, and antivirus software offer protection against cyber threats to keep personal information private. I do this by keeping my accounts with the help of a password manager.

In belongingness, the category of applications includes social media and messaging applications that keep connections with friends and family. These include TikTok, Instagram, and Messenger, allowing me to be in touch with my loved ones, especially those who live so far away.

As for esteem needs, technology brings in opportunities for recognition and achievements. LinkedIn would help showcase your professional achievements, while posting creative content on Instagram boosts confidence through increased engagement and response.

Lastly, at the level of self-actualization, technology enables learning and creativity. Online courses, coding platforms, and creative software allow people to develop skills and pursue passions. I often take online courses to expand my knowledge and grow professionally.

Technology touches all levels of Maslow’s hierarchy, impacting how we meet our needs in an increasingly digital world.
