After watching the video, write a journal entry about how you think the media influences our understanding about cybersecurity.
Movies and television tend to warp the truth of cybersecurity by exaggerating hacking as a rapid, high-tech skill where a few keystrokes can overcome any system. Hacking is actually serious research, patience, and social engineering. Hollywood exaggerates skills where hackers take over power plants or aircraft with a snap of their fingers, creating unrealistic fear. It also stereotypes hackers as either black-hoodie thieves or genius vigilantes, failing to account for the wide variety of roles filled in cybersecurity. These misrepresentations have the potential to be misleading, causing the public to overestimate or underestimate real cyber threats or to underestimate the importance of good security practices. While entertaining, media portrayals need to balance drama and accuracy to better promote an understanding of cybersecurity.
