SPAN 102

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Exploring Culture

This semester I have learned a lot about different cultural perspectives when it comes sports, cooking and even different cultural holidays that are celebrated yearly. Understanding that different foods and sports differ between certain areas through all of South America mostly. Even a lot of the voice recording mechanics were very helpful. With all these tools plus the short videos and all the vocab voice mechanics, talk abroad and many projects all helped my growth tremendously.

I am former navy and have traveled around the world a couple times and with me attending a language proficiency course I feel as if I understand the culture more and can connect a little more to the food and lifestyles of other cultures I’ve visited. These practices would have made everything a lot easier. My world views are the same the places I virtual visited are among some of the places I gave visited and been to a couple of times. A lot of stereotypes and misconceptions are thrown around everyday with all cultures. With the Spanish culture I feel as if the misconception of the food being spicy or to hot is a idea that is wildly outlandish because Spanish culture has some of the best food I have ever eaten.

Engaging in Communities

When dealing with immediate community the local areas might view certain values differently or the living styles might vary from global. Global community would be a lifestyle worldwide which some cultures abide by. A lot of immediate values would e considered traditional. ex: Marriage, schooling, child-birth.

Interpersonal Communication

TalkAbroad was a very big help. it was vey amazing interacting with people in other countries on the spot. TalkAbroad was the best oral/audio tool introduced this semester. I’m sure a lot can agree with that statement. It was the authentic touch the course needed to help with comprehension. It literally forces you to make friendly conversation with friendly people who are looking to help you out.

Presentational Speaking

This Semester in Spanish 102 I have had two online interviews with Spanish natives and the interview were a real challenge at first but with the help of my professor and the Lingro Learning modules the 15 min conversation went by before I even knew what hit me.

Presentational Writing

This semester writing down phrases or words that helped me remember certain rules helped me along the way of learning. With all the rules and different pronunciations of different words its really a challenge.

Interpretive Listening

This is how a very good listening tool it helps with recognizing what the context of a sentence is even if you only understood a few words. Listening to a sentence or two and catching a couple of main words can give you the whole idea of what is being said.

I’ve grown to understand just a little more at a time but listening to the vocabulary over and over again helps as well. That is another activity I learned in Spanish. Repeating is key. Listening to the vocabulary and then writing it down while listening on repeat helped me alot.

Interpretive Reading

With all the reading done in class and on Lingro Leaning the comprehension of different verbs and present past and future tenses really grasp the fundamental vocabulary and skill set needed for further leaning into the language. Challenging parts and unclear parts were just the memorization of the verbs and even some phrases at times. Practicing and repeating the verbiage was key and the only way to overcome the difficulty.
