Journal Entry #15: Digital Forensic Investigator

on

People with cybersecurity-related jobs often take unique pathways to get to their jobs jobs. While some may have a degree in that field or certifications, many people don’t start out that way. Davin Teo talks about his route to becoming a digital forensics investigator in his TED talk. He started out as an accountant and ended up moving to a national digital forensics firm based on an email. Although unusual, accounting gave him a good foundation for becoming a digital forensic investigator. It gave him skills like analytical thinking, pattern recognition, attention to detail, and good communication. All these skills would translate well from an accounting job into a digital forensics investigative job. He might not have had the exact technical knowledge he needed when he first started, but having these skills gave him a good foundation to build upon until he learned the more technical knowledge required. Cyber-security related jobs require many skills beyond just the technical ones, and that is what many people are able to move relatively easily from a seemingly unrelated career into one in cybersecurity.
