This lesson plan focuses on figurative language in the context of adult advanced English learners. In order, the activities progress from students distinguishing between figurative and literal language, then learning various categories of figurative language, providing examples of figurative language from their native language, and finally writing scripts of contexts in which they can use the figurative phrases they learned. These activities progress from an introduction to the topic to intimate interaction with the material to the point that students create their own real-life scenarios applying the material. The purpose behind this is to demonstrate to students exactly how they can use what they learned in class and take it with them anywhere they go.
Each activity allows students to interact with the target language. The warm up meets the objective of categorizing phrases into figurative and literal language and the following activity furthers this objective in having students categorize the figurative phrases into specific types of figurative language such as metaphors and hyperboles. The third activity allows students to share aspects of their ethnocultural background and meets the objective of writing examples of figurative language from their home culture. The fourth activity and wrap up both meet the objective of being able to write a roleplay script using the figurative phrases learned in class to reflect a naturalistic conversation.
