Cyber technology influences relationships between offenders and victims since criminals conduct many forms of crimes, but only online. Criminals perform a variety of internet crimes, including cyber stalking and cyber harassment. Cyber harassment is defined as purposely teasing, harassing, intimidating, insulting, or threatening someone by email, instant chat, or other means intending to harm them. Harassing communications go beyond simple harassment and involve the use of technology instruments to deliver messages that make a person feel targeted for harm. Cyberbullying consists of creating a Facebook account in the name of another person and insulting them. Sending inappropriate text messages or creating a website with photo-shopped images of unknowing people indulging in sexual activities are two instances of cyber harassment. Any act of cyber harassment, if repeated in a pattern or sequence, may be called cyberstalking. Cyberstalking is the relentless pursuit of an individual using electronic or Internet-enabled devices. Cyberstalking includes unwanted electronic messages that can be threatening, coercive, or scary. Stalking is a crime that instills fear, panic, intimidation, tension, and worry in the victim. Chronic stalking may make victims lose control of their lives since they never know when the stalker will appear or contact them again. The stalker’s capacity to access the victim at any time and from any location can destroy their sense of security and generate ongoing concern. Offenders can disguise their identities online, making it easier to engage in criminal behavior without fear of being detected. Because of their anonymity, offenders may commit crimes they would not do in front of others. Cyber technology allows offenders to target victims from anywhere in the globe. This suggests that physical distance is no longer a barrier for criminals, allowing them to target a broader range of potential victims. These cases demonstrate the many ways in which cyber technology affects both perpetrators and victims.
