Article 20:
- Everyone has the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and association.
- No one may be compelled to belong to an association.
I chose article 20 and this image because I feel that this image is the greatest representation for such an article. This photo was taken during the peaceful protest of the women’s march in 2017. During this march there were signs like the one above where the point was made that white women had voted for trump. I see that this image touches on both part one and part two of article 20. Women all over the country at this time had gathered in a peaceful assembly to show their dissatisfaction with the presidents election. Equally at the same time here were women like the African American woman above who came to protests in support of women but did not support the white women at the march. In the image you see three white women in the background looking at their phones and they seem to be enjoying the public setting rather than protesting but the African American woman in front is very clearly making a statement and set to protest. Its almost ironic to see the women in the back having a grand time because it speaks volumes on what the sign is saying. Its clear that the African American woman is saying that the white women made their choice and now they want to complain about it, as if assuming that there were white women at the marches who had suddenly opposed their vote. This image is a great example of now belonging to any one association and peacefully assembling to speak out against injustice. It shows that you can agree with a cause without being associated with it completely.
